Summary

  • New Zealand move closer to semi-finals

  • Aus 134-9: Khawaja 38 (27), McClenaghan 3-17

  • NZ 142-8: Guptill 39 (27), Elliott 27 (20)

  1. Aus 12-0 (Khawaja 10, Watson 1)published at 1 over

A single brings Shane Watson on strike now. He seems to have been around international cricket forever - not many survivors from the 2003 World Cup are still playing for their country (a quick scan reveals James Anderson, Harbhajan & Yuvraj, Afridi, Younus Khan, Gayle and Samuels among others). Watto's off the mark with a single, allowing Khawaja to go the other side of the wicket and whack another four through the covers.

  2. Aus 4-0 (target 143)published at 0.2 overs

Leftie to leftie as Anderson bowls to Khawaja, who had a good winter in this format in the Big Bash League, which probably got him into this team. He starts off by swivel-pulling the second ball of the innings for four through mid-wicket.

Where do NZ get all these left-arm seamers by the way? Is there a special place where they're all bred?

"Australia will take a lot of confidence from their recovery after the first six New Zealand overs, but they must get off to a good start themselves..."

Usman Khawaja and Shane Watson opening for Australia - and somehow, one of those inflatable bright yellow kangaroos has made it all the way to Dharamsala. Burly, bearded left-arm seamer Corey Anderson is going to take the new ball for NZ. Game on.

New Zealand, their T20 kit a mix of the new (black) and the old (1980s-style beige), are preparing to take the field. Even in the foothills of the Himalayas, there's always an edge when they play the Aussies.

Trent Boult and Tim Southee were New Zealand's formidable new-ball attack on home soil during last year's World Cup, but they're carrying the drinks again today with former male model Mitchell McClenaghan leading the seam attack. Meanwhile, Australia's slightly odd selection (which omitted Aaron Finch, the world's top-ranked T20I batsman) features opener David Warner... at number four.

Many thanks, James. An intriguing first half - clearly everything didn't quite go to plan for Australia, as they picked two spinners who only bowled one over apiece, while their seventh bowler Mitchell Marsh ended up bowling his full quota.

But how many runs did Australia save in the field? Catches, run-outs, throws... great fielding can win games. Let's see if it makes a difference today.

Over in Mohali, captain Suzie Bates has passed 50 from 44 balls against Ireland, and shared a century stand with Sophie Devine who has just been stumped for 47. New Zealand are 128-2 after 15 overs.

So, it was very much an innings of two halves from New Zealand. Guptill and Williamson got them off to a flyer, posting 58-0 from the first six overs, but it was downhill from there, with the next 14 producing 84-8.

But, having defended 126 in their first game, and with the pitch slowing up, the Black Caps are far from out of this...

Australia's Mitchell Marsh: "It's a competitive total on this wicket, we'll have to bat really well. They got off to a good start with the ball but it started to slow up a bit as it got older. One of the best parts of our team is we've got so many options with the ball though. It's going to be a challenge for us but we're up for it."

"Getting runs on the board, that's what it's all about. Dealing with the change of pace in New Zealand's bowling will also be key for Australia."

Elliott run out (Nevill) 27 (NZ 142-8)

A suitably ugly end to an innings that started off pretty and really lost its looks. New batsman Adam Milne swings and misses and, with Elliott frantically charging through for a single, Peter Nevill underarms the ball into the timbers.

"It was an absolute ripper of a throw from Maxwell. Right over the top of the stumps, it's a cracker. 'That's me, that's how I let them rip.'

Santner run out (Maxwell) 1 (NZ 140-7)

Oh that's sensational from Glenn Maxwell - Santner hits one to deep extra cover, anyone else and it's probably two but Maxwell unleashes an absolutely doozy of a throw, homing in on the top of the stumps like a heat-seeking missile. Peter Nevill makes no mistake this time, whipping off the bails with Santner just short.
