"This pitch will play pretty well I think, but it is meant to take a bit of turn. England haven't played these Bangladesh bowlers at all really. I'd be interested to see if any of the spinners can get a bit of purchase and cause problems."

Jahanara, her dark green headband in contrast to the thick layer of white sun cream spread across her entire face, is a right-arm medium-pace seamer, and Edwards is up and running as she dabs a single to third man. Beaumont, preferred to Amy Jones today, chops her second ball through point for four.

It's nearly as long as Sri Lanka's - but we're through with the Bangladesh national anthem, and time for the traditional 30-second burst of "God Save The Queen". Skipper Charlotte Edwards and vice-captain Heather Knight lead by example with some wholehearted singing.

"The stats over the last couple of years show Edwards and Taylor score the bulk of England's runs. Mark Robinson wants other players to contribute - those of the next generation - and he wants a more dynamic opening partnership. In the warm-up games Beaumont got a good 50 and that's probably influenced the thinking today."

Bangladesh's anthem up first. Their players are sporting a rather natty array of sunglasses, a very colourful selection of styles including one pair which are bright orange.

The team's flags - the St George Cross and Bangladesh's red-circle-on-a-green-background - are carried onto the outfield, and the teams are standing by to walk on, each player hand-in-hand with a local mascot.

(None of the players take the approach of West Indies' Darren Sammy, who carried "his" mascot onto the field yesterday).

"Australia have dominated the T20 format, taking the last three titles since England's win in 2009. People want to see the best teams perform, so England are under pressure. And I think this is the tournament where they really need to put their name back on the stage."  

We spoke to the Somerset seamer a couple of months back, before their tour of South Africa - and she said there was "no big secret" to her success on the subcontinent.

"As an inswing bowler, on the subcontinent I'm just trying to bowl more balls that are going to hit the stumps than not," she said.

"If you bowl too short, you're going to get whacked. A good length is normally a good length wherever you're playing."

Charlotte Edwards has spoken of wanting to keep England's winning momentum after their warm-up wins over New Zealand (twice) and Ireland - but she has a secret weapon in her line-up.

Anya Shrubsole, incredibly, has a better record (in terms of bowling average, economy rate and strike rate) playing both ODIs and T20s in Asia, than she does in England!
