  • Afghanistan win by 14 runs

  • Scotland have never won a World T20 match

  • Zimbabwe beat Hong Kong in tournament opener

  1. Afg 133-3 (Stanikzai 38 from 39 balls)published at 17 overs

Nabi replaces Naib - forgive me, I'm moderately thankful those two didn't bat together - as former captain Mohammad Nabi replaces Gulbadin Naib, and joins current skip Asghar Stanikzai at the crease. Seamer Safyaan Sharif to bowl. Nabi is off the mark, Stanikzai helps himself to a two and Sharif foxes him with a full delivery but is then penalised with a wide. Three overs to come, can Afghanistan surpass Zimbabwe's 158 from earlier today?

  2. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 16 overs

    Gulbadin c Machan b Davey 12 (Afg 128-3)

Josh Davey fires one out of Stanikzai's reach which causes umpire Erasmus, resplendent in hot pink today, to spread his arms and signal a wide. Afghanistan conjure a single off every (legal) ball - but then Matt Machan takes a superb diving catch for Scotland, running in from the boundary as Gulbadin attempts a heave over mid-wicket.

  4. Afg 120-2 (Watt 4-0-30-1)published at 15 overs

Watt is going to bowl through here, Afghanistan are scampering for every run they can muster while Watt half-heartedly appeals for lbw as a leg bye is signalled by umpire Richard Illingworth. Must have been close... in fact the ball-tracker suggests it was cannoning into leg stump. No DRS in this T20 tournament though.

  5. Afg 114-2published at 14 overs

Matt Machan on for more off-spin, with Gulbadin Naib the new batsman - another right-hander. Just three singles from the first five balls before Gulbadin firmly sweeps him for four.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 13 overs

    Shahzad c MacLeod b Watt 61 (107-2)

A breathtaking innings of 61 from 39 balls ends as Shahzad lofts one into the hands of Calum MacLeod at long-on. He throws his gloves down in disgust as he stalks into the Afghan dug-out - he must have thought a century was on there.

  8. WATCH: Shahzad's shimmy shotpublished at 14:54 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2016

Watch Mohammad Shahzad play an outrageous flick over fine leg for four, from a ball well outside off stump.

  9. Afg 107-1published at 12.5 overs

Young Watt back for his third over, the teenager's trying his best here but Afghanistan are picking everything off here - Shahzad, who can belt the ball miles, shows both sides of his game as he expertly reverse-dabs a four past the keeper, before bludgeoning another boundary wide of mid-on with a big heave across the line, with plenty of bottom hand.

  10. dropped catch

    Dropped catchpublished at 12 overs

    Afg 96-1 (Shahzad 52, Stanikzai 27)

Stanikzai rides his luck a little as he skies Evans over short third man, the ball goes between three fielders and it's left to Richie Berrington running in - he dives forward and gets a hand to it, but can't hold on.

Shahzad then unleashes his version of India captain MS Dhoni's "helicopter" shot, but again the ball falls safely away from a Scots fielder. They need a wicket soon if they're not going to be chasing an almighty target.

  11. 50 runs

50 for Mohammad Shahzadpublished at 11.1 overs

    Afg 90-1

And that's fifty for Shahzad, from only 32 balls. He's hit three sixes - two of which you can view below on the website - and three fours.

  12. 6 runs

How to make a bowler angry? Hit him for six, twice, in successive deliveries.

  13. Afg 88-1 (Shahzad 48, Stanikzai 23)published at 11 overs

Berrington has had a change of ends, but the irrepressible Shahzad steps well across to the off side and flicks a ball - which might have been a borderline off-side wide if he'd stayed still - over fine leg for four! How on earth does he play that shot?

  14. 50 runs

    50 partnership - Afg 79-1published at 10 overs

Sharif returns, Shahzad is tucked up for room by a yorker but still has the skill to nudge it away for a single to bring up the fifty partnership. Then there's an interesting call from umpire Marais Erasmus - Stanikzai steps across as though he's aiming a Dilscoop over the keeper's head, Sharif fires it in outside off stump and Gould declines to call a wide - motioning to Stanikzai that because he moved, it wasn't a wide, even though it was outside the tramlines.

A four over the bowler's head means we have reached the halfway point in Afghanistan's innings.

  15. Afg 73-1 (Shahzad 41 from 25 balls)published at 9 overs

Machan's over of off-spin has cost 15 runs - notably those two big blows from Shahzad, who looks in prime form.

  16. 6 runs

    Afg 71-1published at 8.4 overs

Matt Machan is another Scotland batsman who bowls - but he's given some immediate punishment as Shahzad hits him for two straight sixes in successive balls!

  17. 6 runs

    Afg 58-1 (Shahzad 28, Stanikzai 13)published at 8 overs

Another big six, this time Shahzad foes down on one knee and wallops Berrington over cow corner for a huge six, measured at 98m.

  18. Afg 52-1published at 7.4 overs

But the opener has made his ground. Play on...

  19. Third umpirepublished at 7.4 overs

Medium-fast seamer Richie Berrington is Scotland's fifth bowler, he's also very much a front-line batsman so helps the balance of the side. Shahzad adds a two to take his side to 50. Mommsen then hits the stumps with a direct hit as Shahzad goes for a quick single...
