  • Afghanistan win by 14 runs

  • Scotland have never won a World T20 match

  • Zimbabwe beat Hong Kong in tournament opener

  1. Afg 47-1published at 7 overs

With the powerplay over, Scotland can put a few fielders back as left-arm twirler Mark Watt begins his second spell. Shahzad executes a clever reverse sweep for his second four of the day - the first having come from the first ball of the match. But he plays and misses with a couple of cross-batted swats.

  2. Afg 41-1 (Shahzad 14, Stanikzai 10)published at 6 overs

Safyaan Sharif is Scotland's third seamer, but Afghanistan find easier pickings against him than they did against Evans, picking up singles at will - though captain Preston Mommsen sets a good example with a dive-and-pick-up at mid-wicket which cuts off a ball heading towards the boundary. Five singles from the over.

  3. Afg 36-1 (Evans 2-0-7-1)published at 5 overs

Having taken that wicket, Evans gets a second over, but the Afghans are still pretty nifty between the wickets. You might even say of Mohammad Shahzad, he moves pretty well for a big man. But it's hats off to Evans as he restricts them to just two singles off the over.

Max Baggins-Craig: Sizzling Scotland will fry up a right old entertaining classic but be warned the amazing Afghanistan's attributes. What a day. C'mooooooooon Scottie's :) you've got the strength, quality & skills, let's show em what a fab team's made of.

  5. 6 runs

    Afg 34-1 (Davey 2-0-21-0)published at 4 overs

Shahzad is into double figures with a single, bringing skipper Asghar Stanikzai on strike for the first time - and he gets off the mark in grand style, hoisting Davey for a maximum over mid-wicket.

  6. Afg 26-1 (Shahzad 9*, Stanikzai 0*)published at 3 overs

Captain Asghar Stanikzai is the new batsman - relatively new to the leadership, but he's been on the journey with Afghanistan since their early forays into international cricket over the past decade or so.

A good over from Evans, who unleashes an audible grunt after each delivery - shades of tennis player Monica Seles, or for those who remember 1970s county cricket, wholehearted Glamorgan, Middlesex, Somerset and Sussex seamer Allan Jones.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.5 overs

    Noor Ali c Davey b Evans 17 (Afg 25-1)

After that experiment with spin, Kent-born seamer Alasdair Evans is into the attack, and he makes the breakthrough as Noor Ali top-edges attempting another big hit and is caught at third man.

  8. 6 runs

    Afg 21-0published at 2 overs

Somerset right-arm seamer Josh Davey takes the second over - and Noor Ali takes him on immediately, flicking a full delivery for six over square leg and crashing a four through the covers. A Scotland fielder sportingly reties Noor Ali's shoelaces between deliveries. But Afghanistan are backing up their big hitting with some smart running.

The Afghan fans are on their feet already - the party's already started for them. Coach Inzamam-ul-Haq, the familiar former Pakistan captain, cuts a more inscrutable figure in the dug-out.

  9. Afg 8-0 (Shahzad 7*, Noor Ali 1*)published at 1 over

Young Watt has an unusual run-up - bowling left-arm round, his front foot lands (perfectly legally) outside the return crease, making an unusual angle. But the right-handed Shahzad serves notice of his intentions immediately, belting the first ball of the match for four wide of mid-off.

Some good running from his partner Noor Ali Zadran, who's quickly back for a second run, completes a good first over for the Afghans.

Opener Mohammad Shahzad has seen something behind the bowler's arm he doesn't like - but when that's sorted out, Scotland are going to open the bowling with teenage left-arm spinner Mark Watt.

Afghanistan's anthem doesn't quite rival Sri Lanka's for length, but it ends with a big drum-laden crescendo.

Then it's time for the bagpipes to strike up as Scotland's players all link arms for Flower Of Scotland. They've got a few fans who have made it to Nagpur too.

  14. Anthem timepublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2016

Afghanistan's players stand proudly, hands-on-hearts, as their national anthem is played - as do plenty of fans who have made it to Nagpur, proudly waving their black, red and green national flag.

  16. Afghanistan's danger manpublished at 13:52 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2016

An early man to watch will be Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Shahzad. An unmistakeable, burly figure at the top of the order, he boasts a strike rate of 135.66 in Twenty20 internationals and has already taken a century off Zimbabwe this year.

Scotland, beware. Your consolation is that you won't see him running too many threes.

  17. Backing Scotland?published at 13:47 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2016

Katie McGill, external from the Scotland women's team - who fell at the last hurdle trying to qualify for the Women's World T20 - is backing the Saltires to start with a victory today.

  18. Captain's viewpublished at 13:45 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2016

Scotland captain Preston Mommsen: "We're not too bothered, we think there might be a bit of dew around and hopefully we can restrict them. We're excited to get going. We've had a few good warm-up games - people have got runs and taken wickets and we're ready to go."

  19. Scotland team newspublished at 13:45

And Scotland omit Michael Leask (who's just signed for Somerset), Con de Lange, Gavin Main and Rob Taylor from their 15-man party.

  20. Captain's viewpublished at 13:43 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2016

Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai: "It's looking good for batting now and hopefully after that it will take spin. I think 150 will be a good score. All of the guys are in good form."
