"It's looking bleak. The first six was about head high, but Chris Gayle can hit them. These slower balls are overrated. England have got to find a way of getting Gayle out. It doesn't feel like there's any pressure on West Indies at the moment, but it can change..."

Eugh, that's ugly from Stokes, a horrible leg-side wide. England nerves fraying like a cheap Christmas jumper here. That's the effect of the imposing figure of Gayle down the other end. And there's a more tangible consequence of the big man's presence - slower-ball bouncer from Stokes and clubbed over midwicket for six. And the next ball he repeats the dose! Gayle becomes the all-time leading six-hitter in T20 internationals, and England are in trouble here.

  3. WI 90-2 (target 183)published at 10.3 overs

England turn back to Ben Stokes - but his first ball is a poor one which Ramdin helps down the leg side for four. A single takes him to 12 and brings Gayle on strike.

Graham G, Fife: At a drinks party in Kingston in 2012 Marlon Samuels said to Adil Rashid he would hit him for six early in the game between Lions and Jamaica the next day. Never got the chance as Rashid was called up to World Cup duty that night and didn't play. Samuels trying to make good four years later?

  5. WI 85-2published at 10 overs

While Gayle is exploding into life, Ramdin is struggling to time it. Moeen puts a lid on things with a really tight over which costs just two. Now we're going to have a bit of a break while the Super Soppers come on to dry the pitch.

Pakistan have lost some quick wickets, they're 49-3 after 12 overs chasing 104 to beat West Indies in Chennai.

But there is concern for opener Javeria Khan, who retired hurt and was stretchered off in the first over after being hit on the head by a bouncer from Shamilia Connell.

"The first six was a massive hit. Although Chris Gayle did waste a bit of energy putting so much elevation on it. Those deliveries weren't the worst in the world, but Gayle accepted the invitation. England have got to get him out, somehow. Beautiful shots."

And another! Monstrous from Gayle, an awesome exhibition of brute force, sending Rashid back over his head again with a lazy, almost disdainful swing of the bat.

An interesting combination for the Windies here: Ramdin, quick and busy, looking to nudge and run; Gayle not interested in leaving the crease. And why would you be? That is enormous, in the slot from Rashid and absolutely slaughtered down the ground for a towering maximum. He's come to the party!

Fenners: Well done Rashid! Next time can we not give the opposition 50 runs on the board before we get the spinners on? This is India after all.

Spin from both ends now. Moeen Ali into the attack, but he begins with a drag-down which Gayle pulls into the leg side for four. But he recovers well, just four off the next five, and it looks like England's spinners are slowing the West Indies' charge here.

Denesh Ramdin is promoted up the order. He'll stick while Chris Gayle twists, I think.

"Adil Rashid has bowled four balls, they've all been on target and he's got a wicket. A very important one. It feels like a cheap wicket too - Marlon Samuels rather gave it away when West Indies had all the momentum."

    Samuels c Willey b Rashid 37 (WI 57-2)

He's done it! Much-needed breakthrough for England, Samuels the man to go, not quite getting the pitch, the bat turning in his hands, the ball pouched by David Willey at mid-off. Could that turn the momentum England's way?

  16. WI 55-1published at 6 overs

With Marlon Samuels rampant and Chris Gayle simmering like a dormant volcano, Eoin Morgan throws the ball to Adil Rashid. Good luck, Adil.

"I don't much like the field that's been set. It's all so theoretical - you understand the theory that the perfect yorker works well with this field, but it's not easy to bowl one in these conditions. I think England will turn to spin pretty quickly."

  18. WI 55-1 (Gayle 14, Samuels 36)published at 6 overs

Samuels, still, impassive, not a hint of movement at the crease save for those gum-chomping jaws. And then - pure brutality. Short from Jordan, marmalised through mid-on baseball-style. Jordan under pressure here, a rivulet of sweat inching its way down his forehead. One wide. Another wide. The pressure grows. Gayle on strike, the destroyer, can Jordan respond? One, two, three perfect yorkers. Still nothing from Gayle. Until the final ball. Jordan errs by a foot, Gayle gets underneath with a vicious swing of his bat and sends it streaking over mid-off for a one-bounce four. West Indies very much on top here.
