  1. WI 44-1 (target 183)published at 5 overs

That was very much not what the doctor ordered. Hit through the covers by Samuels, it should be stopped on the boundary by Jordan, but he lets it trickle tamely through his hands. A third straight boundary, problems for England. Now then, what's happened here? Full toss from Stokes, clubbed straight to Jason Roy at point, but the umpire calls it a no-ball for height. Not a lot of argument from England, it has to be said. They sorely need a wicket here...

  2. WI 38-1published at 4.3 overs

Eoin Morgan mixing it up early here, adding the fiery pace stylings of Ben Stokes into the mix. He's unlucky with his second delivery, edge through the vacant slip region by Samuels for four. Samuels, who is seeing the vast majority of the strike here, follows up with another boundary, clubbed through mid-off. England take some time to have a powwow and dry the ball. Ideas needed...

"I can't remember West Indies taking a single - I think there has been one. Everything else has been boundaries or extras."

  4. WI 30-1published at 4 overs

Brilliantly, is the answer. He reads Jordan, backs away to leg and makes room to carve him aerially behind point. Top shot. He tries it again, but this time CJ is ready for it and follows him down the leg side. Good contest.

  5. WI 25-1published at 3.3 overs

Chris Jordan is brought into the attack. Nice start by Jordan, fizzing a couple of short balls past Samuels's earholes. Three dots, how will Marlon respond?

Ken, Newcastle: Get Chris Gayle out and it's England's day. Easier said than done, obviously...

  7. WI 25-1 (Gayle 10, Samuels 13)published at 3 overs

But Willey releases the pressure valve with a leg-side delivery that Samuels is able to clip fine off his legs for four. Thus emboldened, Marlon cracks one through the covers for four. No foot movement, all arms. I imagine he has a very particular style on the nightclub dancefloor.

  8. WI 16-1published at 2.3 overs

Samuels looks nervy early on, unsure how to combat the shape that Willey is getting back in to the right-hander. First, he has a fidgety flirt at one outside the off stump, then he gets an inside edge that cannons back into his pad. What will Willey do with his third ball? It's excellent again, shaping back on a fourth-stump and inducing a miss from Samuels again. Pressure on Samuels here...

"Eoin Morgan is adjusting his field now. He's bringing third man up to cover where Chris Gayle has just hit those two boundaries. It's a risk but England have to get Gayle out."

  10. WI 16-1 (target 183)published at 2 overs

The next ball gets the same treatment, flayed over mid-off, and this time it clears the rope. Topley under pressure, but he responds well with a slower ball that Gayle doesn't pick, and one that cramps him for room. Big test for R-Top, but he looks up for it.

  11. WI 10-1published at 1.3 overs

Gayle calmly watches his first delivery sail harmlessly wide of off stump. He defends the second ball. Eye in yet, Christopher? Yep. Third ball he bludgeons Willey over mid-off for a one-bounce four. Ominous...

"Martin Samuels was almost lbw twice and David Willey might have been in the hunt for a hat-trick. What we have seen, is swing. Samuels was perilously close on the first one."

  13. WI 6-1published at 1 over

Marlon Samuels is the new man, and he's in all sorts of strife early on - he misses two consecutive deliveries which straighten back in and hit him on the pads, and survives two raucous LBW appeals. Height saved him, I think. Willey strives for too much off the final ball and Samuels clips it off his legs for four. Lavish swing there for Willey though.

"I thought Johnson Charles wasn't going to walk off. He skimmed it towards Moeen Ali - who definitely caught it - about an inch above the ground. A wicket for David Willey in his first over - things are looking up!"

    Charles c Moeen b Willey 0 (WI 2-1)

Gone! Big early breakthrough for England, and Johnson Charles, the man with the back-to-front name, is back in the sheds. He tried to heave it into the leg side but mistimed it, and it's pouched low down by Moeen at midwicket.

"Chris Gayle is box office. And the key man England will want to get out. You never quite know how he's going to go about his business, but the ideal way to get him is after he's played himself in and then got out. A 15-ball five."

A brief group hug from the boys in pink - sorry, Shock Red - before Eoin Morgan sends them on their way with some words of encouragement.

Out stride Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle, practising some straight-bat defensive strokes. Oh Chris. You tease.

A lot of pressure on England's relatively inexperienced pacemen here. David Willey and Reece Topley could come under assault here. On the other hand, both have had the knack of picking up early wickets in their short England careers so far.

During that innings, a tweet popped into my timeline about a horse at Cheltenham called Sergeant Reckless. It occurs to me that would be quite an apt nickname for one Chris Gayle, who will be leading the West Indies reply.
