    Eng 163-5

Bairstow glides Mathews down to the third-man boundary, and that's his half-century. He's played very nicely, reversing the momentum of this innings with some attacking strokeplay - basically the job that Ben Stokes tried to do, done a bit more sensibly.

Now Bairstow misses with an attempted sweep and the ball eludes everybody and trickles away for four leg byes. Everything running England's way now.

"Missing leg stump again - by about the same amount as last time. Sri Lanka lose a review."

  6. Eng 154-5published at 15:27 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

He's inside the line, but once again the ball is sliding down the leg side - it didn't grip enough. In truth, that looked like a review born of desperation rather than any real conviction.

  8. Third umpirepublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

But hang on! Sri Lanka reckon they might have got Bairstow. Hit in front by Herath, initial verdict is not out, but we're having a second look...

  9. 6 runs

Thus reprieved, Bairstow immediately applies a hefty dose of sodium chloride to the wound by lofting Herath over the top for six!

"What Bairstow knew, that we didn't, was that he had advanced down the pitch. He has moved his guard out of the crease and sashayed forward."

  11. Eng 147-5published at 15:22 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

No! The ball is shown to be sliding down the leg side, and Bairstow survives. What a sickener that is for Sri Lanka.

"I don't feel as if he's hit it. I don't think the omens are great for Bairstow."

  13. Third umpirepublished at 15:21 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

Now then, now then! Angelo Mathews brings himself into the attack and raps Bairstow on the front pad. Up goes the finger. Has he done the trick?

  14. Eng 145-5published at 15:18 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

The brollies are going up and the ponchos are coming on. I wonder if this might be the last over before the weather gods intervene. Ooh, dicy from Hales, nearly overbalancing to Herath and giving Chandimal a stumping chance, but he just squeezes his big toe back into the crease in the nick of time.

  17. Eng 141-5 (Hales 61, Bairstow 39)published at 15:14 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

These two are looking to push the pedal now - hard running brings a three where there really shouldn't have been. Hales plays a high-elbowed push into the off side to bring up 60, equalling his best Test score. For those wondering, I agreed to the ear-singeing in the spirit of 'try anything once'. The barber got out a big dangly cotton bud, dipped it in something highly flammable, set it alight and proceeded to wave it about my ear-holes. It was both terrifying and oddly life-affirming.

"Nothing to lift a Yorkshire crowd like one of their own flaying an opposition attack around Headingley. Jonny Bairstow has been in rare form for the county this season, and he's taking some of that sweet timing into the start of his Test summer."
