Bairstow gets off the mark - looked a bit edgy but it earns him three on the off side. A chop in front of square gets him another three. Hales then punches Pradeep down the ground, and that will be four. Over on TMS, Boycott is in full flow...

"This is not Alex Hales' natural game. He wants to attack but he has reined that in - and he has been forced to continue that as wickets tumble at the other end."

Hales has gone into his bunker again. A maiden off Eranga makes it one run from his last 19 deliveries. Hmmm...

Jonny Bairstow has continued his fine form of the past year by registering a double hundred and a 198 for Yorkshire already this season.

Speaking on behalf on Test sponsors Investec, he told BBC Sport: "I'm really pleased with the way it's gone over the past 18 months. I want to kick-on and keep improving. hat's the nature of international sport, you have to keep proving yourself.

"It was a culmination of things coming together. It was great coming back to Yorkshire and being allowed to go and play. It all knitted together nicely.

"I didn't do much differently, I just went out to play. Everyone spoke about my backlift - it was just something that happened naturally."

Pradeep has got that 'wild man' look going on. Long, straggly barnet. Unkempt beard. Stary eyes. Not exactly the sort of look you'd want for a job interview, but for an international fast bowler, quite effective. He's finding a little bit of movement outside the off stump, but Bairstow isn't tempted. Yet.

    Chief sports writer at Headingley

"Groans around Headingley as Stokes holed out, just as he was threatening to wake the crowd from their postprandial slump. Although you'd think the loss of five wickets for 34 runs would have done that already. A sleepy start to the Test summer this is not."

Jonny Bairstow - very much the form man in the England batting line-up - is the new man. Big knock needed here please, JB. Eranga sends down an uneventful maiden to Hales.

"What an awful shot. It's shocking. England are getting themselves out. Compton is the only one who was got out. The rest are just playing airy-fairy. I hope they put their hand up later and say they batted poorly."

Ben Stokes doesn't really have an off-switch, does he? You either have to yank the plug out of the socket, or wait for the inevitable short-circuit. That's what happens here - he goes for his fourth big shot of the innings, and instead ends up spooning an ugly mistimed hoick to mid-on. Dear oh dear oh dear.

Merlyn: Oh England... It's all so predictable.

Thomas Foulston: Summer's here, and here is the English batting collapse to signify the start of it.

  11. Eng 82-4published at 14:02 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

Ben Stokes is the new man, and he's going to try and counter-attack. He plays an aerial leg-flick that just eludes the diving man in front of square, then drives a full delivery down the ground, then puts him away on the off side. Three fours in three balls...the volcano is bubbling.

    Shaminda Eranga celebratesImage source, PA

"That's gorgeous bowling but it's not there to drive. That's on the up. The foot could have been much closer to the ball. They play so much one-day cricket and they come to Tests where the ball just does a fraction and they can't change. That's good bowling but, if Vince is honest, he will say it's not really there."

    Vince c Mendis b Eranga 9 (Eng 70-4)

He was looking good, but we said the Sri Lankans wouldn't be too disheartened to see him driving - and that's why. Vince goes hard at a very good delivery from Eranga, full and straightening, and gets a thick outside edge which is well pouched by Kusal Mendis at second slip. England in a spot of bother.

  16. Eng 70-3published at 13:52 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

Shaminda Eranga gets the cherry at the other end. It's windy out there, a stiff breeze rippling the shirt of the Sri Lankan seamer. Vince picks up his first boundary with a flowing drive that splits the fielders on the off side. Eranga, looking to encourage a flashy shot or two, won't be too miffed. Ooh, that's even better from Vince, punching perpendicularly down the ground for another boundary. Good start for England after lunch.

"Alex Hales has grafted. He has seen two poor shots from Alastair Cook and Joe Root. But he has reined himself in and that shows  application. He has got himself a nice little start. That's how he should play a bit more. There's enough time to adapt and play differently."

  18. Eng 62-3published at 13:47 British Summer Time 19 May 2016

James Vince has retreated into his shell like a hermit crab confronted with a flock of seabirds. He's faced 18 deliveries without scoring. Finally he gets off the mark, punching Pradeep into the off-side and just beating the outstretched mitt of point. Hales was beginning to look fluent before lunch and he picks up where he left off with a back-foot punch behind point for four.

Thanks Steph. I actually haven't finished my lunch. I've still got a half-eaten flatbread on the desk in front of me. Not quick enough. Talking of not quick enough, here's Nuwan Pradeep - who was none too threatening in the morning session - to open the bowling for Sri Lanka after lunch...
