Dropped! Jonny Bairstow gets a life on 70, put down by bowler Nuwan Pradeep. Bairstow belts it back at pretty catchable height, but Pradeep looks stunned at the chance, trips slightly, and never looks like catching it. It's a pretty awful effort, to be honest. I'm telling you now, if Pradeep still had his mullet he would have caught that.

I might need a first-change bowler for tomorrow. Left-arm spin if possible. 1pm start in Burnham, Essex.

Jonny Bairstow's backlift is terrifyingly menacing. Graham Gooch used to wait with the willow lifted high, but this is something else. Club behind his head, as if he's about to beat the living tar out of the non-existent short leg. Twice he chases when Eranga gets too wide but gets nothing. Maiden over.

If Hales continues this style of play today, is he in danger of being the player to score the slowest ever maiden Test century, English or otherwise?

In all the Bairstow busyness, it's not escaped my attention that Alex Hales has failed to score so far this morning. Anchor dropped, roots going deeper into the Headingley turf, natural instincts being fought with every sinew. Finally moving with a single to mid-on.

"Dasun Shanaka took three wickets within his first 14 balls of Test cricket yesterday. I couldn't find any Test cricketer who took his first three wickets quicker. Phil Edmonds took three in his first 15."

  7. Eng 186-5published at 11:17

There's the 100 partnership, brought up when Bairstow dabs a couple more through third man. Very warm applause, cranked up more so when the England keeper puts the jet heels on to take a couple to deep square leg that should never have been on. He's lightning between the wickets, Bairstow. All of us wicketkeepers are.

Adam: For Dumfries, away to Kelburne CC. 12pm start. Looking for a batsman that can score a ton, and take a five-fer!

Duncan Terry: I can play tomorrow, depends where it is. I'm in Glasgow.

Duncan, you know what to do.

You can't help but feel there's a right old knees-up brewing at Headingley. A beer-drinking group in Ben Stokes masks is signalling four when Bairstow half-edges, half-guides Pradeep through third man for four. Jonny B's intent has Sri Lanka in retreat - there's a man gone back to the deep point fence.

"Bairstow is seeing it so well that even though he didn't time that perfectly it sped away through extra cover."

Jonny Bairstow is in the deepest of purple patches. Smoke on the water, if you will. He greets Shaminda Eranga with a back-foot drive through the covers for four, with noise inside Headingley already topping what we had at any point yesterday. In other fancy dress news, there's some chaps in sombreros and ponchos.

"I think young Kusal Mendis is the guy who is batting best for Sri Lanka. He's got two half-centuries in the tour matches. He might be the one to look out for. But there are lots of worries: there's not a lot of depth in the batting, and the tail begins at eight. That's why they need to keep England to a manageable score."

  13. Eng 172-5 (Hales 71, Bairstow 55)published at 11:03

Hint of sunshine, a few signs of a breeze, Bairstow back under way with a tuck off his pads. The tall, slender figure of Alex Hales continues to be watchful outside off stump as some blue appears overhead. In the crowd there are some chaps dressed as lifeguards in pink. One from the over.

Nuwan Pradeep has the ball, Jonny Bairstow is on strike. Only two slips. Play.

I can see a pattern developing here. Maybe fixing teams up with players will become a regular Friday feature.

Less importantly, the players have emerged into a slightly gloomy Headingley. There are a mammoth 98 overs scheduled for today. We could be here until 19:00.

Milton Keynes City CC: If you're helping with selection. We also need an 11th for our 2XI tomorrow. Trying to hold up our 100% win record.

In fact, I'm going to make it my mission to find Adam (10:52) that final player. The BBC is a public service broadcaster, after all. If you're available for a game tomorrow, shout up. We'll narrow down the logistics later.

"I think Sri Lanka can be very very pleased with their work on day one. But it's all about the implementation of plans. Chameera, for example, was quick, but he banged it in a yard short. Those are the areas that Sri Lanka are going to have to work on today."
