Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"James Anderson's bowling seems absolutely ideal for Headingley. He pitches it full, he moves it in the air, and he nips it off the ground. It's a real surprise that he averages over 40 here. But if he finds the right length, he will be dangerous."

  4. What's the weather forecast?published at 10:48

BBC Weather's Simon King: "I suspect there will be a full day's play. It will be dry and temperatures will get up to 16, perhaps 17. There is a small risk of a shower this afternoon but if there is there will only be a brief interruption.

"But be prepared for some interruptions at the weekend. On Saturday we will see some rain. and on Sunday there will be some showers around."

"Jonny Bairstow has got this barn door coming down when he bats. He has got this aggressive nature that takes the game away from the opposition."

Good mood after seeing Father John Misty at the Roundhouse the other night.  Bad mood, I’m still in recovery and it looks like the forecast for Saturday means that my cricket match is likely to be a goner.

  8. Hales gives 'lesson for all players'published at 10:44 British Summer Time 20 May 2016

    Michael Vaughan
Ex-England captain on BBC Test Match Special

"Alex Hales played really well. At Headingley when the ball starts swinging around, you've got to do what Hales - the one shot you've got to be careful of is the drive. He has been brought into the team to play expansively, but you can't do that all the time. It's a lesson for all players."

And, naturally, we are all over today's play like Jabba the Hutt lying on a guinea pig. Listen to TMS (which is on air right now), watch the highlights as they happen and, as a last resort, read my nonsense.

It's all right here on this page. We live to serve.

Greg Double: Bairstow needs to provide the assist for Hales' first century. Keep the score ticking over so Hales can graft home!

I'll be honest, I'm in a ruddy good mood.

Not only do I get to talk cricket to you, dear friend, but I also heard the Divine Comedy's National Express and City Of Blinding Lights by U2 back to back on the radio this morning.

If that wasn't enough, my girlfriend is off to London tonight. The official line is I'll miss her dearly but, off the record, it means a Friday night in the pub.

And before we move on, we'll have one final look back at yesterday. Watch this, the best bits of TMS, video highlights and even a little Jamie Vardy, all in one place. It's brilliant.

Yep, day one in Leeds had ebb, a little flow, then was curtailed by wet stuff coming from the sky.

With debutant Dasun Shanaka taking three-fer, England slipped to 83-5 before being rescued by an unbroken stand of 88 between Alex Hales and Jonny Bairstow.

With the home side 171-5 this match is delicately poised. As is now and ever shall be, the first hour looks crucial.
