Pressure. Broad is on the money and almost gets his reward as Mendis pokes dangerously at one to steer the ball wide of the slips and to the rope at wide third man. His last ball has Bairstow and his behind-wicket colleagues oohing as it beats the outside edge.

You'd forgive Kusal Mendis for being a tad nervous. He is on a pair and facing a world-class bowler with form and conditions on his side. He eases those with a drive through cover for three runs, not that this will ease the screw that England are tightening.

"Anderson looks a million miles from the bowler who struggled in South Africa."

"It was a serious delivery. He needn't have played it, but it bounced and left him and just brushed the shoulder of the bat. It was a cracking delivery that you hope, on your day, you miss it."

Lift off. Anderson gets a shortish ball to rear up and swing away from Karunaratne, which the batsman couldn't quite withdraw his bat away from quickly enough. The edge takes the ball to Bairstow, who claimed five catches in the first innings and now has his first of the second. Anderson is firmly in the groove - ominously for the tourists.

"Sri Lanka only hit 14 fours in their first innings. That's the first one of this innings."

  11. SL 9-0published at 11:22 British Summer Time 21 May 2016

No surprise to see Stuart Broad charging in from the other end. Karunaratne rocks back to a slightly wide delivery and punches the first four of the day square before claiming another two through a similar area. An unruffled over and a bit from the tourists.

  14. SL 3-0published at 11:18 British Summer Time 21 May 2016

Jimmy gets some movement right from the off to finish the over he had hanging over from the day before. Couple of runs added by Sri Lanka. Just the 204 more needed for score parity.

Ryan Kirkham: Younis and Akram. Can't name a partnership more feared.

Yusuf: Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis! Perfect left-right combo who've bruised the toes of many a great batsman.

Graham England: Some great bowling partnerships mentioned, but what about Waqar Younis & Wasim Akram? Bagged hatfuls of wickets between them.

Here is where Jimmy stands in the list of leading Test wicket-takers. There is a good chance he will add to that today...

"If you get 30, it's the equivalent of getting 60 or 70 at other grounds. Any experience these young Sri Lanka guys have of surviving in these conditions will do them the world of good. They need to know that if they bat for an hour against Anderson and Broad, then they've achieved something."

As you'd expect, Aggers was full of praise for Jonny Bairstow following his century-making efforts on Friday. Here is a small snippet of what he had to say in his column...

"Bairstow's 140, his second Test century, was an outstanding innings and a quite remarkable in the context of what has been a low-scoring game.

"It was his stated ambition to make a Test century at his home ground - where his mother Janet works - and to have achieved it can only help his confidence flourish."
