Andrew Samson
BBC Test Match Special statistician
"Nick Compton has 109 first-class runs at 15.57 runs this season. He hasn't got a fifty in 14 innings, since his 85 at Durban."
BBC Test Match Special
Lunchtime. Naturally, we'll be continuing all the chat right here while also keeping an ear on TMS, where Jonathan Agnew is in conversation with former England batsman Graeme Fowler. 'Foxy' is one of a number of cricketers who has spoken out about mental health issues in the game - and starts by reflecting on his stewardship of Durham University's centre of excellence which has produced 60 first-class cricketers.
England 83-2 (31 overs, won toss)
Batsmen: Hales 45*, Root 12*
Fall of wicket: 39-1 (Cook 15), 64-2 (Compton 9)
Bowling: Eranga 7-1-25-0, Lakmal 9-3-17-1, Pradeep 9-3-27-1, Herath 6-0-12-0.
Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
"Honours even for the first session. Sri Lanka would have hoped for a bit more swing and zip on the pitch, England would have hoped not to be two down but they've got 80-odd and Alex Hales is looking set."
Eng 83-2
We see the Cookie Monster for the first time as Shaminda Eranga bowls the final over before the break. Joe Root covers up and the players head off for a brew. 83-2, honours about even. The stories? Cook misses out on 10,000 and Compton simply misses out.

Steve Belshaw: Another nervy & unconvincing Nick Compton innings. To be the very best, England need drivers, not passengers.
Ben Sutton: Needs a big score in the second innings or that's the last of the summer wine for Compo you'd feel.
Theo Knott: Hope Compton's troubles mean a chance for James Hildreth, who is in blistering form. Best of his generation not to be capped.
Joe Root is doing his best to make sure this Herath over is the last before lunch, but all the guard scratching and gardening won't eke it out that long. He takes a single, Sri Lanka jog through. One more coming up. We're going to have 31 in the session! Unheard of.
Nice from Root, opening the face on Pradeep to earn four through third man. As for the Compton wicket, watch this clip and decide for yourself. What's indisputable is the quality of the catch. You really won't see a better bag on the rope. Maybe only two overs to go before lunch.

Francis Edwards: That's Compton all over. Digs himself into a hole that he can't get out of then feels he has to try and whack it.
Tim James: Ludicrous way for Compton to get out. Time running out on him to get a big score.
Josh Roberts: What a bizarre shot from Compton. After his interview, you'd think he would try and #digin, external. That was beyond loose though.
After all of that, Hales remains, moving towards a second successive half-century with a belting cover drive off a loopy one from Herath. I'm still trying to decide if Compton was unlucky or the master of his own demise. Perhaps a bit of both. If you don't hit it in the air, they can't catch it.

Joseph Perry: If that's how he reacts when he takes a screamer, I'd hate to see him drop one.
Jay: How did he take that?
So many stories in that one wicket. It had to be Compton that fell to a worldie, didn't it? He lingered in disbelief, perhaps at the catch, perhaps at the shot he played. The snaffle was one of the best boundary catches you'll see. Time seemed to stand still as Lakmal lay on the ground, the silence eventually punctured by Sri Lanka's incredulous celebrations. Joe Root the new man.
Graeme Swann
Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special
"He ran forward, misjudged it, and had to take it with two hands behind his head. It was good bowling - on a real slow, low pitch, the batsmen get set into a rhythm and the odd surprise short one can be effective."
Compton c Lakmal b Pradeep 9 (Eng 64-2)
Oh, Nick. This is an incredible catch, but it's a fairly awful shot to end a skittish innings. Hooking at Nuwan Pradeep from quite some way outside off stump, Compton gets a top edge towards long leg. Suranga Lakmal is underneath it, running towards the boundary, hurling himself backwards. He gets his hands to it, hits the ground, but has he touched the rope? He lies motionless for what seems like an age, then claims the catch. It's clean and it's simply wonderful.
And breathe. Bat was down. It's still edge-of-the-seat stuff, though. I'm not sure I can take a whole day of this.
Eng 63-1
Nick Compton, no? Quick single, direct hit. Surely not?
