  1. Eng 63-1 (Hales 38, Compton 8)published at 12:38

Yes, Nick Compton. Looking more comfortable against the pace of Pradeep, Compton gets the sort of delivery his across-the-stumps stance thrives on. On the pads, tucked square for a well-run three. Hales! Biffed down the ground, straight of mid-off for four. Yet another leg before appeal is rebuffed because of an inside edge.

Oli Major: Interesting choice here from Compton, choosing to play every shot with his pads.

Jon Adams: I always want players to do well, but isn't the fact that Compton's SO nervous and jumpy just show that he isn't cut out for it?

Jay: On another day, Eng would be in the midst of one of their famed collapses if all these ump call decisions had gone the other way.

Compton is out of harm's way, taking Herath through the covers for a single. In his place, Hales has to deal with the Herath box of tricks. Use of the crease, flight, drift, even the odd hint of swing. At the end of the over, Hearth briefly puts his shades on, he's that cool. I wear my sunglasses at night...

At lunch today, TMS will be speaking to ex-England, Lancashire and Durham opener Graeme Fowler, who is one of several former or current cricketers - including Marcus Trescothick, Michael Yardy and most recently Monty Panesar - to speak frankly about mental health issues in cricket. Should be an insightful listen.

  5. Eng 55-1 (Hales 34, Compton 4)published at 12:31

Excellent Center Parcs chat, Chris. Lake District or Nottingham? Oh yes, lovely from Hales, a boshing back-foot drive between point and cover for four. Pradeep, bowling too short, gives Hales another go, only for the point fielder to intervene. When Pradeep gets the length right, Hales is trapped on the crease, but that's going down the leg side.

Compton resumes his battle with Herath, nicely going back to work off his pads for a couple. Then more heart-in-mouth moments, Compton shuffling with all the conviction of your granny on rollerskates and being hit on the back pad. Honestly, I'm not sure if I can watch this. Willing him to do well....

"Pradeep is bowling half a yard too short. You've got to get the England batsmen playing forward."

  9. Eng 47-1published at 12:25

Now it's Hales' turn to be the subject of a leg before shout, trapped on the back foot as Pradeep jags one back off the seam. This one is very definitely going over the top. Sri Lanka have improved out of sight since the Cook wicket - that makes the skipper's shot all the worse. Angelo Mathews goes through some looseners. It feels like we're on the verge of more wickets...

Jack Mendel: Nick Compton looks frenetic and unsettled. Moving around the crease like a cat on a hot tin roof. Needs to calm down!

Tim Miller: If he gets a duck, I'm cracking a "Straight Out: Compton" joke.

  11. Eng 47-1 (Hales 30, Compton 2)published at 12:21

Nick Compton, keep your pads out of the way of those. Big shout for leg before, just sliding down. Watching Compton is fraught with tension - how I imagine a father would be watching his son. It just feels like danger is around every corner. Come on, Nick, dig in. That lbw shout was hitting leg....

"I don't think there will be a great amount of spin if Herath bowls, but he might vary his width and catch Hales on the crease."

Spin for the first time, Rangana Herath...

  15. Eng 46-1 (19 overs)published at 12:18

Pradeep prowls in towards Compton, with three slips and a gully waiting. Beyond them is a skyscraping arm of a blue crane, its movement suspended in respect to the action. Compton, slightly jumpy, pounces on a short ball to take a single, before Hales eases one of his own off his pads. Two men looking to establish themselves, one looking much more at home.

The single that gets Nick Compton off the mark draws what I think is the biggest cheer of the day so far. Away from the middle, there's a huge queue for whatever is being sold in a white marquee. Beer or tickets? Beer or tickets? Beer, surely.

Mike Bell: Anyone know the bookmakers' latest odds for Joe Root to get to 10,000 Test runs before Alastair Cook?

Arthur Clarke: I wonder how many people have bought tickets, and still will before he does it, to say 'I was there when Cook reached 10,000!'

  19. Eng 43-1 (Hales 28, Compton 0)published at 12:10

Hands up if you thought Alex Hales was cut out for Test cricket? My hand remains down, but he's following up his Headingley grit with some Durham digging. When Pradeep gets too full, he presents the full face for a straight drive that is the shot of the day so far.

"You just have to bat well and forget about the milestone. Cook's footwork was poor this morning. Ryan Harris gave him so many problems bowling outside the off stump, and anyone who's a student of cricket will have seen what happens if you get him playing away from his body."
