"This is a marvellous celebration. I've never seen this before. The gloves are on the deck, the bat's three metres from the gloves, the helmet's three metres away from the gloves. Tremendous innings."

Chandimal is really dragging this out. He's now had seven balls on 99, eight balls - now they look for a single and Rangana Herath, who has the turning circle of an articulated lorry, has to hit reverse gear pronto. Mrs Chandimal presses her gloved hands together on the balcony...But finally, he's there! Edged through the gully, and Chandimal lets out a roar and leaps in the air. He kisses the badge on his helmet and thrusts it towards the balcony. Well played sir, it's been an absolutely brilliant innings. And it's given Sri Lanka, whisper it quietly, just the merest sniff of a chance...

Oooh, nervy times from Dinesh Chandimal. On 99, he prods and pokes his way through a maiden from Moeen Ali.

"The Sri Lankan team have been indoors all day watching the cricket. They've all made their way to the balcony in their beenies and hoodies, the gloves are on. He's one run away from what will be a brilliant century."

Chandimal creeps towards his century with a single to mid-wicket. Another sharp drop-and-run to mid-on takes him to 99...

That's an absolute moonball from Moeen and Chandimal, perhaps a little startled by just how bad a delivery it was, can only gently pat it to Compton at mid-off. He then knocks a couple through point.

"Herath's turned himself into Brian Lara. He's played well. We've had the cut shot, the pull shot, the drive."

Daniel Gurney: Pitch is obviously still placid. It's a good mental test for the bowlers. Less lateral movement = more lateral thinking.

Rangana Herath is my new hero. He's just middled a gorgeous square-drive off Woakes for another boundary. Alastair Cook is never going to enforce the follow-on again, is he?

Is it possible that, with a bit more Sri Lankan resistance, Bairstow's dropped catch is part of Cook's masterplan: bowl Sri Lanka out with them about 30 ahead, so that Cook can knock-off the five runs he needs to get the 10,000 runs monkey off his back?

That tweet went slightly over my head, but it's started an absolutely extraordinary conversation in BBC Sport towers, in which the full extent of wife-swapping on 70s children's TV programme Rainbow has been laid bare. Apparently Jane was married to Rod before she hooked up with Freddy. "They were the Fleetwood Mac of children's television," one colleague tells me. My innocence has been well-and-truly shattered. Next you'll be telling me that Otis the Aardvark had a substance problem. Chandimal, one shot away from his ton now, blocks out a maiden to Moeen.

Rachel T: My favourite Rod was always the one from Rod, Jane and Freddy. (Jane and Freddy got married recently!)

Are we getting to the stage where Chris Woakes could end up taking Steven Finn's place in the side? As out-of-sync as Finn looks, Woakes looks just the opposite: like a well-oiled bowling machine. Not an actual bowling machine, obviously - that would be against the rules. He keeps Herath honest with a probing maiden.

"Chandimal looks most distressed at this end. He had his hand on his helmet thinking 'what on earth's going on? I'm six away from 100 and Herath's playing a reverse sweep.'"

A nervous moment for Herath as he tries another audacious sweep against Moeen and hears the clatter of timber behind him. He's lucky though - the ball has come off Bairstow's pads.

Herath swings Woakes through square leg for two more. I reckon you'll be turning you arm over again, Rangana...
