Gordon Thursfield: Good thing Mo got some runs, bowling four balls per over wide of the stumps. The mighty Finn does look fit either. Why no Rashid?

  3. SL 440-7 (lead by 43)published at 14:13

A curious game of two halves developing here. At one end, Dinesh Chandimal is swinging like a rusty gate. At the other, Shaminda Eranga is inventing batting from first principles. Still, Eranga is solid enough to rebuff the best efforts of James Anderson.

"Have a blow, Mo. Get your other jumper on. It's not been your Test match with the ball. It just hasn't worked for him, I'm afraid."

Curiously, still Moeen. What does Chandimal do here? Stick or twist? Bosh! Down the ground, almost swinging himself off his feet for four down the ground. And again! Slog sweep over cow corner for six! Absolute biffery. Tremendous entertainment.

"Jimmy Anderson's 450th wicket was just the second lbw of the series. The other was Angelo Matthews at Headingley, which if he'd referred, he'd have been given not out."

  7. SL 430-7 (Anderson 24-6-58-4)published at 14:06

England will feel like they are in the chicken coop now. Shaminda Eranga is the start of a nine, ten, jack that provides about as much resistance as soggy toilet paper. Slips loaded, Eranga hinting at using the bat but ultimately not getting anywhere near the ball.

Herath lbw Anderson 61 (SL 430-7)

Like the police breaking up a party, James Anderson has put a stop to the fun. DRS confirms that the ball would have smashed into middle and leg, Rangana Herath getting too far across to one angled in from round the wicket. I'll be honest, I'm disappointed. I was rather enjoying that.

Oh, Rangana. I'm afraid you're plumb here. You quite fancy this batting lark, so I understand the review, but this will be wicket number 450 for James Anderson...

"Who would Herath want to be facing after lunch? Mooen Ali. Who doesn't he want to be facing? You've got to put yourself in the mindset of the batsmen. You wouldn't want to see Broad, Anderson or Woakes coming in. They've got it wrong."

  12. SL 430-6 (Chandimal 111, Herath 61)published at 13:58

OK, so there's no need to panic yet, but when do England start getting twitchy? It's a good deck and will remain so, but, if this continues, a chase in excess of 100 is on the cards. Herath, now in full Sobers mode, belts another sweep off Moeen. Nick Compton, at short leg, is entitled to ask for danger money. Just for a laugh, here's that James Vince drop.

James Anderson looks mildly ticked off on a good day. At the moment he's boiling hot enough to cook pasta. It's not helped by the fact that Herath, number eight in a team that previously looked like they had never batted before, is now playing like Viv Richards. Anderson begs for an lbw, but that's too high.

Well batted! Rangana Herath gets his second Test half-century with a push off Moeen Ali for a single. The whole Sri Lanka team have shuffled their woolly hats to the balcony to applaud him. Huge smiles. Little wave of the bat from Herath, as if he does this sort of thing every day.

"Very difficult chance. A big swing outside off stump from a full delivery which has gone very high in the air with a blustery wind out there. Vince has kind of turned like a corkscrew."

    SL 415-6

Dropped! James Vince drops a complete goober and Rangana Herath gets a life. It's an almighty swipe at James Anderson, sending the ball into the grey sky. Vince, running back from point, is flailing around as the ball swirls. Back-pedalling, falling, he doesn't even get a hand on it. Anderson, the bowler when Chandimal was dropped this morning, looks murderous.

Rob Meech: Pleased to see Sri Lanka making a game of this. One-sided matches never draw in spectators. Nobody wants a non-contest.

Kat Young: I leave my desk for lunch and come back to Sri Lanka leading. Well fought tourists, well fought.

If this goes on much longer we might have to check to see if Sri Lanka have smuggled Sanath Jayasuriya out there under the name Rangana Herath. One sweep shot nailed for four, then the audacity to reverse sweep, then another sweep. Herath rapidly climbing my favourite cricketers list.
