Cook's progress is steady and serene. So far, he has looked solid and on top of the Sri Lankan attack, without being spectacular. He is 79, Bairstow 36 as England reach 150 with a couple of singles off the returning Pradeep.

Bairstow is rarely blocking. He is always looking to work the ball around to score. It is to the wily Herath's credit that he keeps the Yorkshireman in check.
