Scott Appleyard: Not me personally but an oppo had his Ferrari stolen whilst batting, watched it drive off whilst on strike.

Yaseen Rana: We were fielding in a game next to a church when the bell ringers started practice. Umpire missed a clear caught behind...

Matt Coombs: Expats knock up in Ecuador, volcano Tunguruhua erupted in the background. We just stood back & watched from a distance.

Oh, Moeen. Don't do that, please. A few balls into his innings, he leaves a swinging ball from Pradeep that only just clears the stumps. Another wicket and England really are on the ropes.

"He did it the ball before, working the ball from outside off stump. This one just looked out. Sri Lanka have deserved that, they have really stuck at it. Cook has played an indiscreet shot. He played across it."

Cook lbw Pradeep 85 (Eng 164-5)

This is a testimony to the application of the Sri Lankan bowlers. Yes, Cook has looked solid throughout the day but he has not been allowed to score freely at any point. Pradeep gets the ball to swing back in and trap the England skipper. Great time to strike, five minutes before tea.

Well fielded the man at gully. Bairstow tries to guide an Eranga delivery down to third man and would have had four but for the diving stop of the man behind the wicket. These two are guiding England back towards a respectable total before tea.

Ooo, Bairstow gets four from a drive at a Pradeep ball, just short of a length. He had the confidence to have a go at it, but it was aerial for enough time for an extra wide slip to claim should Sri Lanka have opted for one. He retains strike with a scampered single to get home at the non-striker's and beat the throw.

England remain content to amass runs without going on the attack. Sri Lanka's poor ground fielding helps them out, specifically the man at extra cover who dives and fluffs to give Cook a couple.

"That catch at mid-wicket that Jonny Bairstow got any with was a straightforward cuckoo. That would have made a real dent for England. We all drop them. I dropped Dirk Welham at the The Oval, I would have been better opening my mouth."

Cook's progress is steady and serene. So far, he has looked solid and on top of the Sri Lankan attack, without being spectacular. He is 79, Bairstow 36 as England reach 150 with a couple of singles off the returning Pradeep.

Bairstow is rarely blocking. He is always looking to work the ball around to score. It is to the wily Herath's credit that he keeps the Yorkshireman in check.

  17. Eng 148-4published at 15:13 British Summer Time 9 June 2016

Risky stuff from Bairstow. He knocks the ball down the ground and sets off for a single, diving to just beat the throw from mid-off that breaks the stumps.

Cook then damages Mathews otherwise exemplary figures with a flashing drive to the boundary through extra cover. Lovely shot.

An umpire using a camera has surely got to be distracting to the batsman? It's got us thinking - what is the strangest thing that has distracted you behind the bowlers arm?

  19. Eng 143-4published at 15:08 British Summer Time 9 June 2016

Cook is back in the boundary game with a cut off Herath to take him to 74. It was a jab, in truth, but the slope took care of the rest.
