"It is a perfect batting position for Moeen, coming in at seven. It allows him to take the game away from the opposition, particularly when England are in trouble, as they have been today."

There's a beardy chap on the front row, pink cap. In front of him are at least three empty bottles of fizz. Elsewhere, a man in a blue shirt nurses what looks like an entire jug of Pimm's. If this was Headingley, he'd have a tray of bitter all to himself. In the middle, Moeen reaches for a wide one from Lakmal, easing an aesthetically pleasing drive through the covers for four. That's the 50 partnership.

"England will look to bring in another spinner for the India tour. It will be up to one of the county spinners to stick there hand up and say they are the one. Scott Borthwick will come in to the reckoning at the top of the order and he also offers a bit of spin."

Indeed it is Herath, shuffling to the crease like a man in his slippers. Over the wicket, arm barely higher than the stumps, teasing Moeen with all sorts of flight and guile on and around off stump. Crowd hums in half-interest, Moeen sweeps, gets nothing. Wily maiden.

We've talked about some of the luck that Jonny Bairstow has had. Not only was he dropped when he first came to the crease, but he's also had these half-lives since tea. Suranga Lakmal, one of the two mullets in the Sri Lanka pace attack, returns and has the swooshing Moeen playing and missing. Rangana Herath is getting loose.

Richard Billington: A game I played in was halted when a fielder was shot in the leg by a kid with an air rifle.

Ben Tompkins: My brother Chris and I played a game many years ago against the inmates of a local prison. The game ended abruptly when one of the inmate prisoners chased a ball to long-off, but instead of fielding it, decided to make a bid for freedom and simply ran off into the distance…

No John, but we can send a car to the mechanic. Alex Hales, owner of The Worst Shot To Be Played On The First Morning Of A Test, walks round the boundary, on the way to the nets. Good idea. I've often thought you don't see enough Test cricketers doing a lap of the ground. Meanwhile, Bairstow, toying with the field, late cuts between slip and gully for four.

John Collins: People criticising DRS, it's not perfect but cars breakdown, doesn't mean we should still use horses to get around.

I hear that for the Bairstow review 49.98% of the ball was hitting the stumps. If that's true, that's incredible. I'm slightly confused by this 'more than 50% of the ball has to be hitting'. I mean, how much of the ball does it take to dislodge a bail? Either way, Bairstow has another ton in sight. Back foot drive off Pradeep for four. It's almost a surprise to see him push back a dot ball.

It just feels like the leather could be in for some punishment (with apologies to Jason Gillespie). Two batsmen with hundreds in this series at the crease, both looking to score at every opportunity. Eranga, tall, trousers on the short side, into the hips of Moeen, flicked to the square leg boundary like a man flicking the head off a dandelion.

Marc Fletcher: Just seen the worst of DRS there, 49.9% of the ball hitting the stumps but not out.

Cloudless blue at Lord's, as it has been all day. Moeen Ali pointing his bat towards the sky then unfurling a cover drive that is as luscious and fullsome as the beard that flows from his chin. Two shot-makers at the crease now. It feels like England might make an evening move.

"Jonny had one of those in the innings at Headingley, when he played so well. He reviewed it - and it was just missing."

Umpire Ravi swings his arms in front of him, as if doing the Charleston. He's vindicated by the tiniest of margins. It would have clipped the leg stump, but not enough to send Bairstow on his way. Do we count that as another life for Jonny? Maybe half a one.

Yep, my initial thought here was that it was close. Eranga to Bairstow, leg before shout turned down. Sliding down the slope?
