Nodders? I sometimes think pro sportsmen speak a different language. Can someone translate please? England happy to knock it around, running hard, just like Sri Lanka did earlier (well, apart from the running). At this stage, though, the Lankans were only four wickets down. England aren't much behind on runs, mind.

  3. Eng 115-6 (target 287)published at 25 overs

Floodlights just taking effect as Sri Lanka post an off-side catcher for Prasanna to Woakes. More raucousness from the terraces as the fleet-footed Buttler gets to the pitch of the ball. England slowly rebuilding, but their climb of this mountain has repeatedly been hampered by falls.

"I would target Buttler with some short balls, get some people on the boundary, and pretty much the same ball could go either to the off side or the on side."

Farveez Maharoof, who runs up as if his braces are caught on the sightscreen, is back, kissing the ball each time he sets on his way. More noise from the crowd, what sounds like a Mexican Wave. Punchy from Buttler, off the back foot to the cover fence. All the timing of Animal on the drums.

"Prasanna is extremely aggressive. He attacks the stumps, gets a lot of drift. And if you miss it, he hits."

  7. Eng 103-6 (target 287)published at 23 overs

Mike, I think Joe Hart is the cricketer in the England team. A fast bowler. I'm not even kidding. Buttler looks for a reverse whack off Prasanna but almost gets into a muddle. Huge cheer when a leg bye brings up the England 100.

  9. Eng 98-6 (need 189 from 28 overs)published at 22 overs

Sri Lanka are happy to sit back. Singles can't hurt them just yet and England don't have the resources to go big for quite some time. The crowd are quiet, but one rascal is wearing an outstanding bow tie and blazer combo in the colours of the Union Flag. John Bull.

  11. Eng 94-6 (Buttler 28, Woakes 4)published at 21 overs

Prasanna, who indulged in some top biffery earlier on, creeps in to whir down his leggies with what looks like a doubled-jointed wrist. Full length, both these England players using their feet. Three singles down the ground.

Michael Davis: I guess this not the consistency the skipper had in mind!

  13. Eng 91-6 (target 287)published at 20 overs

Pradeep, the second most impressive mullet in cricket after his team-mate Eranga, takes a drive from Woakes on the ankle. Is Woakes holding out a hand to turn down the single, or to apologise to Pradeep. Don't say sorry, Chris, it's his own fault for sticking a hoof out. Drive nailed by Buttler, through the covers for four.

  15. Eng 85-6published at 19 overs

England lost five wickets in the first 16 overs, a real rogues gallery. Hales' baffling review and Root going back to a half-volley were the lowlights.

"I've not seen a great deal of Prasanna. He didn't look like a leg-spinner that would get too much of the away shape. He looks like he'll drift them in and skid them on to the stumps."

  17. Eng 85-6published at 19 overs

Chris Woakes must be as surprised as anyone to find himself in the middle this early. He arrives facing the leg-spin of Seekkuge Prasanna, who seems to have it turning both ways. You can hear a pin drop in TB, it's that quiet. I'm pretty saw I've just heard one chap in the pavilion order two lagers.

"Just trying to over hit it. We've seen him play a beautiful shot through extra cover. You have to give Sri Lanka credit for getting something more out of the surface. 82-6, we didn't have this in the budget at the halfway stage."

    Moeen b Pradeep 7 (Eng 82-6)

And the next one goes. Moeen Ali looks for a repeat back-foot drive, but it's too straight from Nuwan Pradeep. Bottom edge, stumps everywhere. Trent Bridge is stunned into silence. England are making a huge meal of this. Hors d'oeuvres, appetiser, starter, main, dessert, cheese, coffee, the lot.
