Ex-England spinner on BBC Test Match Special

"This England team have been all about attack attack. They've been taking it away from the old-fashioned game. But this is the time for a bit of regrouping."

  2. Eng 35-4 (target 287)published at 9 overs

You could say that Sri Lanka have expertly adjusted to the conditions. They have bowled straight, varied the pace and nibbled here and there. Morgan! Cutting in the air, this time for four, rather than to a fielder.

Merlyn: England what are you doing? This pitch is a belter.

  4. Eng 31-4published at 8.4 overs

All happening. New man Jos Buttler survives, just beating a direct hit. Frenetic doesn't come close.

"It's a fairly ordinary shot by Bairstow and it's a fairly easy catch. Strange shot by Bairstow, almost like a bit of overconfidence there."

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 8.2 overs

    Bairstow c Gunathilaka b Lakmal 3 (Eng 30-4)

It's lemmings off a cliff. Jonny Bairstow goes miles too hard at Suranga Lakmal, pushing the ball to point where, this time, Danushka Gunathilaka makes no mistake. England are in complete disarray, making a complete hash of what should be a straightforward chase. They bat deep and they are going to need all 11.

Here's the Root wicket. See if you can work out why he played it off the back foot...

"It wasn't a difficult chance, I suppose. He got two hands to it. Massive drop there for Sri Lanka you'd think. Jonny Bairstow is the form player for England."

  11. dropped catch

Bairstow dropped on 0published at 8 overs

    Eng 29-3

Do not give Jonny Bairstow a life. Just like in the Test series, Sri Lanka have shelled Jonny Bairstow at mid-wicket. Angelo Mathews the bowler, Kusal Mendis the fielder, moving to his right between knee and hip. Two hands to it, in and out. The last time the Lankans dropped Jonny B, he got a ton. Incredible start to this England innings.

"Somebody like Keiron Pollard, big wing span, might have caught that."

  13. dropped catch

    Close!published at 7 overs

    Eng 25-3

Close! Morgan likes a dab outside off stump and almost comes a cropper when ones get big on him. Top edge, the man at wide first slip diving high to his left, just unable to get a hand on it.

Teddy Hale: Nice to see England cricket team getting themselves into all sorts of bother early on.

ThreeLionWhip: This is some shocking start!

Jimmy 'JDawg' Dawson: Captain innings needed here. Morgan's moment we all know. This is make or break moment.

  15. Eng 21-3published at 6.4 overs

Lakmal to Morgan, the skipper showing a pendulum swing of the bat to push back down the ground for four. In the posh seats, Andrew Strauss looks stunned. He's probably worrying about where this leaves the Super Series.

    Charles Dagnall
    BBC Test Match Special

"England in serious bother. This crowd has been quietened considerably with the first three wickets to fall."

  17. Eng 17-3 (Mathews 3-0-9-2)published at 6 overs

England played the extra bat, and they need the fine form of Jonny Bairstow right now. Looking again, I still cannot believe Joe Root played that delivery off the back foot. He stomped off shaking his head and looking at his bat. "Why did I do that?"

    James Taylor
Ex-England batsman James Taylor on BBC Radio 5 live sports extra

"I can remember Angelo on a number of occasions in Sri Lanka doing the exact same thing a couple of years ago. He's a canny operator. Root has paid the price. He usually does the bulk of scoring for England, but now it's up to the others."

  19. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 5.5 overs

    Root b Mathews 2 (Eng 17-3)

Awful. Just awful. If Alex Hales called for a baffling review, then Joe Root has played a bewildering shot. It's a nothing delivery from Angelo Mathews, the type that Root keeps out in his sleep. Length, off stump. Just play forward. Simple. Instead, Root goes back, gets an inside edge on to pad, then on to off stump. Not even club standard. England all over the show.

Tim O'Shea: I can only assume Hales thought be'd been given out LBW, knew he'd hit it and not realised it carried to the fielder.

Scott Wollington: Surely Joe Root should have told Hales not to review that.

Charles Christie: Morgan wanted a consistent England and his prayers have been answered. The top order consistently capitulating!
