  • First ODI of five-match series

  1. Eng 76-5published at 17.2 overs

Moeen Ali bats with all the elegance of Audrey Hepburn. I'm saying Hepburn was elegant, I don't know a great deal about her batting, other than she usually went in at number three. Back-foot through the covers by Moeen, lovely flourish.

Philip Pugh: Now it's England's turn to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. An England win is as likely as Brazil winning #EURO2016, external.

  3. Eng 76-5 (target 287)published at 17 overs

Still the England batsmen come, Moeen Ali joining Jos Buttler. England probably still have the resources to chase these runs, but all the momentum is with the Lankans and the required rate is up above a run a ball. Near silence inside TB, the Notts crowd knows England are in the soup.

"Eoin Morgan was on 43, but Angelo Mathews kept slip in just for that possibility."

"It's the only shot that he's looked like getting out to. He's played some lovely shots but he's run one too many down to third man for my liking. It's a nothing shot."

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 16 overs

    Morgan c Chandimal b Pradeep 43 (Eng 72-5)

Game over? The Sri Lanka plan works and Eoin Morgan falls to a limp prod outside off stump. All night he's been tested there. There was an edge past slip, some nice drives, a lot of wafting and, eventually, a soft edge to the gloves of Dinesh Chandimal. At drinks, half of England's batsmen are back in the shed.

Scott Lennon: I got 8/1 odds for Jos Buttler top run scorer. Thought it was too good to turn down. Fairly confident.

  8. dropped catch

Buttler dropped on 14published at 15.2 overs

    Eng 69-4

This is a tough school, so I'm calling this a drop. Jos Buttler drives at Nuwan Pradeep, doesn't go through with the shot offering a chance to Farveez Maharoof at mid-off. The big man dives full length, gets a hand on it, but can't cling on and sees the ball skip away for four. Both of these England men have now had a slice of luck....

"Joe Root went back to a full one today - I've not seen that for a long time. I wonder if he would have been better suited to having a little rest from the game. I guess it proves he's human - for such a long period he's been so consistent in all formats."

  10. Eng 65-4 (target 287)published at 15 overs

Only one over for Shanaka, but no spin yet. Farveez Maharoof, who I think has been playing in this Sri Lanka side for about 28 years, on for more medium pace. Still, he continues to stick to the party line, testing Morgan outside off stump. For every dreamy drive the skipper has played, there has been a waft. Stand now worth 35.

"We got so used to Joe Root carrying the ship on his shoulder the last year or so. This year he's had a bit of sticky start to the summer. Maybe too much expectation from us?"

  12. Eng 61-4 (Morgan 40 from 43)published at 14 overs

Not what Sri Lanka want to see, Angelo Mathews being escorted off the field by the physio. He's under his own steam, so I suspect he'll be back. Nuwan Pradeep replaces him in the attack, Morgan's love-hate relationship with deliveries outside the off stump continuing.

  14. Eng 59-4 (target 287)published at 13 overs

First change for Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka over-pitching with his meds and getting driven back down the ground by Morgan. England slowly rebuilding, this stand is worth 29. It's tense, though. I wonder how many are at the bar at the Trent Bridge Inn. No many, I fancy.

Tez: Angelo Matthews is probably my favourite cricketer playing today. So much charisma.

  16. Eng 48-4 (need 239 from 38 overs)published at 12 overs

Still Mathews and his wobblers as it starts to get darker at TB. One more wicket and you'd think England are toast, even with such a long batting order. Morgan, barely getting one in his half, hooks and cuts, while Buttler ramps via the hands of unsighted keeper Dinesh Chandimal.

"He was building up to that in the over. He's worked his way up to a beautiful extra-cover drive. That will certainly give their captain some confidence."

  18. Eng 43-4 (required rate 6.25)published at 11 overs

Lakmal, who dismissed Bairstow in his previous over, has a man out on the hook for Morgan. The Lankans will keep testing the England skip on the back foot. On the England balcony, Joe Root looks as upset as a boy sent to bed without any dinner. Loose waft from Morgan, lucky not to edge behind, but followed up with a dreamy cover drive.

Scott Wollington: New England's fearless cricket? I'm fairly fearful now to be honest.

Thomas Knights: This batting effort is nothing short of embarrassing. No application at all and poor technique.

  20. Eng 39-4 (target 287)published at 10 overs

What were saying about Mathews doing everything in this team? Runs and wickets, he probably tucks his team-mates in each night. His shoulders look even bigger than they did in the Test series as he teases Jos Buttler with medium pace that should be very whackable. When Morgan gets on strike, he grits his teeth and prepares for more short stuff. Like Bart Simpson, England have fallen down a well. Where's Sting when you need him?
