"Umpire Rob Bailey had a pottery shop in Stoke. I think he's still got it. He used to try to sell you mugs at square leg."

Maharoof moves like the Tin Man just before his oil supply runs out. He creaks in to the crease and smacks the ball into Roy's pad but the ball looked to be going down (in fact it is umpire's call) so the calls fall on uninterested umpire ears.

Roy flogs him through midwicket for four to keep the runs coming and move into the 90s.

"That might have flicked the bottom of the glove. They lost a review to real poor lbw shout earlier on. There's nothing conclusive here."

  4. Eng 151-1published at 19 overs

Sri Lanka are up and desperate for a catch as Root looks to sweep Prasanna. The umpire moves to raise tourist hopes then dashes them by signalling wide, much to the delight of the Oval crowd. Barely a shot played in anger that over but still seven runs earned from it.

This is the highest second-wicket partnership for England against Sri Lanka in ODIs, beat Alec Stewart and Graeme Hick's 125 in the 1999 World Cup.

In theory, Gunathilaka is there for the taking here. But such dibbly-dobbly stuff can sometimes turn into hand grenades if you're not careful. These two are seeing it like a beach ball, though. Root takes a couple of steps and batters the ball back down the ground for a one-bounce four.

Right-arm round spin from Gunathilaka. It opens up an angle for Root to exploit, which he does so with ease - a sweep for four to reach 50, from 39 balls.

"It looks like Roy and Root are having a good craic out in the middle. It looks like they've having a bit of fun."

  10. Eng 132-1published at 17 overs

Technically, Root is playing the conservative role to Roy's aggressor here but he still has a strike-rate over 120. Roy mishits for what might be the first time in his 55 balls with an attempted blow down the ground. He quickly makes up for it, though, with a reverse swipe for four. Class. England pass their D/L requirement for 20 overs three overs early.

"That's the first over since the seventh of the innings that Sri Lanka's have gone for less than six an over."

Lakmal makes a miraculous recovery and is able to continue. Maybe it was just a bit of cramp? England add a couple more to the total.

It is now gloomier than a Lars von Trier film marathon.

"The physio is getting stuck in out in the middle. It was all on show for Lakmal for a minute."

  15. Postpublished at 19:32 British Summer Time 29 June 2016

This is all a bit awkward now for Lakmal. He turns onto his front and drops his strides to let the physio work away on his upper leg. This would be fine but for the dark clouds creeping ever closer.

"I don't see how you can bowl when you're struggling with your right leg like that."

Cheers Steph. I'm going to try and sneak in here like a drunk teen trying not to wake his parents at 3am. I don't want to be accused of cursing this. So just pretend I'm not here England, you carry on.

They do just that with Roy flicking and Root pushing the ball around before Lakmal drops to the turf after three balls. I think his hamstring has gone.

  18. Eng 116-1 (target 308)published at 15 overs

Spin for the first time - has Seekkuge Prasanna just sniffed the ball? Not a great time for a leggie to be bowling, but he's landing it somewhere near. If the drizzle remains, the umpires are happy enough with it. Roy, he of the six over mid-on, gets lucky with a top-edged reverse sweep. To watch the weather, here's Phil Dawkes.

"It is not often I feel sorry for bowlers but when they up against the skill of Root and Roy on a pitch like this... Roy has that magical gift. He has some similar shots to Kevin Pietersen. And he has that strut as well."

Hoods up in the crowd, but no brollies. The wind ruffles Lakmal's shirt as he runs in, Root pulls straight to a fielder. Very mizzly in the distance. We might need a little luck to avoid another delay.
