Flew from UK to New Zealand for one night to watch Wales in semi of Rugby World Cup in 2011. Player sent off after 15 mins, missed last minute kick at goal, lost by a point. Long flight home the next day. Expensive trip.

The umpires look at each other, Suranga Lakmal aborts a run-up to boos. They turn to cheers when Root pummels a pull shot for four. We need 20 overs for this to constitute a match. If England don't lose any more wickets and keep going at this rate, they would be miles ahead on D-L.

The ball is going to all parts. Jason single-handedly trying to salvage the reputation of Roys everywhere. Through the covers for four, a shimmy to tickle to fine leg for four more. Maybe it won't be close after all. There's a filthy cloud looming, mind.

"You have to get the ball up and force the batsman to play one side of the wicket. At the moment it is all a bit too free from Sri Lanka."

"It is good to see Joe Root find a bit of flow. This is a good wicket for a player wanting to feel bat on ball. I am confident for England. I think it is covered."

More gentle medium pace from Sri Lanka, Dasun Shanaka met with a pounce of a pull shot from Joe Root. England are rattling along here, well up with the rate, but the sizeable target means they will need pretty much this pace and nothing less for the rest of the night. Another pull for four from Root - the Shanaka buffet is open.

Well batted, a 39-ball half-century reached with a deft late cut for a single. Six fours and one monster six over long-on. Half a job, mind, so much further to go in this run chase. Show of the bat to all corners, applause from the dressing room.

Sri Lanka need a wicket so recall Nuwan Pradeep to the attack. Roy, now seeing it like a watermelon, doesn't mind, shimmying to muscle the ball down the ground for four. Ouch! A bullet of a pull shot rattles the fence before the fielders can move. He's on 49...

Spent a week working in San Francisco in the late 90s, caught the Friday evening flight home, 20 mins sleep in 11 hours, landed at Heathrow at 11am, hired a car, drove home to Putney, picked up kit, drove back out to west London for 2pm start, opened bowling, took one wicket in three overs, heavens opened, match abandoned.

One of the Sri Lanka fielders, I didn't see his face, is wearing two caps on his head. That might be a tribute to Goldie Lookin Chain. Ooofff, that's a good 'un from Maharoof, cutting Roy in two. Inside edge, past the keeper and away for four.

Getting dark now, the floodlights just starting to take full effect. This medium-pace duo, both with the keeper up to the stumps, remind me of early 90s New Zealand - Chris Harris and Gavin Larsen. Long-hop from Mathews, cut for four by Root. Next ball, not as bad, Root guides past point with wrists of elastic.

Wallop! First maximum of the innings, Jason Roy skipping to greet new bowler Farveez Maharoof with a mighty belt over long-on. Chemical Brothers plays inside The Oval, totally incongruous with the dark, wet scene of a pretty miserable June day. Only just joining? One wicket to fall, that of Moeen Ali, up the order in place of the injured Alex Hales.

Comedian & BBC Test Match Special statistician

"England are scoring at around 100 runs per 100 balls since the World Cup in 2015. Prior to that they were scoring at 83 per 100 balls. So they are scoring a whole run an over extra since the World Cup."
