    "Derbyshire claimed two wickets in the afternoon session but Worcestershire continued to work hard to try and deny them their first Championship win of the season.

    "Joe Clarke (63) and Ed Barnard (73) were both caught off the impressive Will Davis and Alexei Kervezee offered a chance, which was not taken.

    "The home side will require a further six wickets from a minimum of 35 overs after tea if they are to force victory."

    Graham Onions tries his luck from round the wicket and the tactic pays off as Gary Ballance edges to the keeper after making 32 off 40 balls. Ballance is only averaging 28 in the Championship this season, hardly the form that might earn him an England recall.

    His dismissal, however, is a big blow for Yorkshire, who need 212 more to win off 39 overs. Skipper Andrew Gale arrives at the crease to partner Alex Lees, who is now 65 not out. 

  6. Borthwick eyes Test recall

    Durham all-rounder Scott Borthwick was interviewed on Test Match Special during the lunch interval and said he was "determined to have another crack" at international cricket, after making one Test appearance in Australia two years ago. 

    Some see Borthwick as favourite to replace Nick Compton at number three for the start of the forthcoming series against Pakistan, but he did not advance his cause in the current game against Yorkshire, being dismissed for two and four.

    Varun Chopra is denied a half-century as teenage leg-spinner Matt Parkinson adds another wicket to his first-innings five-for, with Chopra pinned on the back foot by a ball that hurries onto him. 

    Jonathan Trott joins Ian Bell and you get the feeling the game may now be entering the decisive phase. Warwickshire need 228 from 41 overs.

    Will Davis strikes again at the County Ground and Derbyshire only need six more wickets for victory over Worcestershire. Ed Barnard hit nine fours in his career-best 167-ball innings, but an attempted pull leads to his downfall. Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Alexei Kervezee are now together for the visitors, who are still 121 behind.

    Ben Stokes may only be out on the field as 12th man, but he makes an important contribution for Durham by catching Adam Lyth at first slip to send the opener on his way for 50. Yorkshire suffer a second setback from the very next ball as Barry McCarthy brings one back off the seam to have Kane Williamson lbw.

    Gary Ballance is beaten by the next delivery, but there is no hat-trick. Yorkshire need another 242 from 48 overs, with Alex Lees still there on 60.

    Derbyshire finally make the breakthrough as Joe Clarke becomes Will Davis' first victim in Worcestershire's second innings. Clarke, who hit nine fours, put on 146 with Ed Barnard, who is still there on a career-best 70. Worcestershire are still 133 in arrears.

    Pace bowler Jackson Bird has left Nottinghamshire a game early to prepare for Australia's forthcoming tour to Sri Lanka. Bird took 15 Championship wickets at an average of 37.2 for Notts, who lost by 228 runs to Surrey on Wednesday. 

    The 29-year-old will be replaced at Trent Bridge by South Africa leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who will be available from the beginning of July. Dan Christian is likely to fill the overseas player role for their next Championship game against Warwickshire.

    Worcestershire continue rearguard action

    Joe Clarke reaches a 105-ball half-century at Derby with two runs off Will Davis. His stand with Ed Barnard, who is 55 not out, is worth 118 for Worcestershire, but they need plenty more if they are to save the match.

    Yorkshire lift the tempo

    Yorkshire have now got their foot on the gas at the Riverside. Alex Lees collects two successive fours off Scott Borthwick to reach a 76-ball half-century, his second of the game, with partner Adam Lyth on 38 not out. The defending champions require 266 more from 56 overs to win.

    Sussex finally find a way to dismiss Ben Duckett as Chris Nash hangs onto a chance at second slip. His partnership with Alex Wakely added 96 and barring a dramatic collapse, Northants look well set to earn a handy lead. Wakely has 37 not out, the new batsman is Rob Keogh.
