But that's all for now. In a Test of returns, we've seen nothing yet of Gary Ballance and Mohammad Amir.

Instead, it was a 42-year-old playing his first Test at Lord's that stole the show.

Misbah's celebration, it was marvelous wasn't it? It's going to be one of the moments of the summer. Not many that will beat it.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, speaking to Sky Sports: "We're in a good position at the moment. We really want to score another 100 runs to give us a good chance.

"I'm really disappointed that Asad Shafiq missed out on scoring a hundred at the home of cricket. He has been an outstanding player for us at number six.

"A lot of things have been said about my technique and the outside edge, and the celebration... I promised the guys.

"We had an Army camp and every time we had to get down and do 10 press-ups. Those in my celebration can't count because my arm was bent!"

But the day belonged to Misbah, the 42-year-old who became the oldest Test centurion for 82 years. It's his continuing presence tomorrow that could be the difference between the two sides when it's all said and done.

Woakes is by far the best bowler. He shapes the ball. His introduction was at The Oval. He's got pace. He shapes it out when nobody else has moved it much. 

And, in the end, England were relying on Chris Woakes...

Finn you feel like he is still running in through glue, chocolate or mud isn't it? He tries really hard, and it's like we're waiting for him to catch fire and do well.  

He's never been great. We don't want to go back to the days where you were in and out, you could count them like fleas. It's now a case where yo're waiting to come in. It will be that Anderson will come and he could play alongside Woakes.

But Steven Finn struggled...

England bowler Jake Ball on Sky Sports: "To get the first ball down and somewhere near was nice and the second ball looked pretty adjacent from where I was.

"Those last two wickets were massive and picked us up bit and given us a bit of buzz if we come tomorrow and get couple early right in game.

"I was pretty relaxed managed to get decent night's kip. It was nice to receive my cap from my uncle and a moment I won't forget in a hurry.

"I really enjoyed my wicket. When he reviewed it, I was nervous because it looked like it was sliding down but to see it clipping leg stump was really nice.

"If we can get them out for 350, we have batsmen who can score runs at a decent rate."

Back at Lord's, it was a day of near misses for England...

Hampshire and England batsman Michael Carberry has a tumour that is cancerous.

A club statement says that the left-hander has had a brief period feeling unwell and will undergo further tests before "the relevant treatment commences".

Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove said: “I would like to send him and his family our very best wishes at this very difficult time. 

"‘Carbs’ has taken on and beaten serious illness before and we will be doing all we can to make sure he does the same again this time.”

Misbah could play Moeen even if he was aged 52. It's not to say bad of Moeen, he just fancies spinners and he's damn good at it.

Today’s all about Misbah. We all look at statistics, and their tail doesn’t look that good. Bet England were thinking, we get a couple we can race through this. But Misbah, I wouldn’t call him an ugly duckling, what he does know is he knows his own game. That’s a tremendous compliment. He knows where he can score.

Dan Gee: I've been a fervent critic of Woakes. Say it quietly but I think I might have been wrong.

Simon Goodall: And the award for the most brainless cricket shot of the year goes to............

It was interesting from the point of view that the scene ebbed and flowed. Pakistan were in trouble and Misbah got them out. But if you ask me from the whole day what do I remember, it’s nothing. It was a bit like chess all day. The pitch was good, the sun shone, the outfield was fast. It looked good for batting. Their batting lineup is quite fragile. If you were a bowler would you fancy their top order? Yes.

That aberration from Rahat Ali gives Chris Woakes a fourth wicket, the Warwickshire man now firmly England's third choice behind Broad and Anderson. A cracking day for him, but one we'll remember most for the performance of Misbah-ul-Haq.
