  1. Pak 199-4 (Misbah 63, Shafiq 38)published at 16:56

England had the chance to break this partnership not to long ago. The running in this clip was like something out of a Benny Hill sketch. Width from Broad, belted square for four by the impressive Shafiq. At time like these, one would usually consider some tweak, but Moeen still has nightmares about what Misbah did to him in the winter.

There are a few empty seats inside HQ, patrons possibly nipping out to the Nursery Ground for some champers or snoozing in the Harris Garden. For some reason, I have Meatloaf's Paradise By The Dashboard Light in my mind as Pakistan milk the returning Steven Finn for singles here and there. Batting is looking rather straightforward.

It's been a steady and interesting day but nothing remarkable has happened which you would remember when you go home at the end of the day.

  5. Pak 190-4 (partnership 56)published at 16:46

Definite reverse hoop from Broad, the ball wobbling back into the right-handed Shafiq. In the crowd, two chaps are sporting pink and white caps, next to two others in full egg and bacon blazers. Dressed in the dark. The in-wobble allows Shafiq to work off his pads. Progress is barely pedestrian.

When you watch Misbah bat you think he doesn't look very good.

He isn't stylish and gets chest on but he has done alright in Test cricket.

He has a way of making runs.

Stephen, you raise an excellent point. I'd also say that Bob Fleming wasn't a million miles away from Fred Trueman in his Indoor League days. Sun out at HQ, England just starting to toil as Misbah, an immovable picture of determination, clips Ball down the slope for four, despite the dive of Steven Finn.

Thanks, Bibhash. While I was away, my attention was drawn to the chaotic ending to the Tour de France, Chris Froome doing his best Kate Bush and running up that hill. It's the most interesting thing I've ever seen in the Tour. Broad to the very organised Shafiq - is he looking for a hint of reverse? Steady stuff, a maiden.

Misbah wasn't even in the frame.

Ballance wasn't that far away from the stumps at cover and had enough to aim at.

Ballance almost had time to wait for Bairstow to get up to the wicket.

The batsmen were both at the same end.

Chance for a run out! But Ballance can't quite find the mark. But what about that mix-up? Shafiq sets off for a single, Misbah wasn't sure, then set off himself. The result: both batsmen nearly ended up at the same end. One of those if-only moments for Ballance.

And on that note, I shall hand you over to the expert arms of Stephan Shemilt for the rest of the day's play. Bye for now!

This track is going to get better for batting.

The second and third day will be the best days to bat.

It appears the Lord's pigeon (or one of his lookalikes) that earlier graced the outfield has joined the conversation with some of the members. Or maybe he's taken a fancy to those expensive wines. Either way, he's perched on the boundary hoarding. On the field, Woakes is toiling away as Misbah and Shafiq bring up the 50 partnership.

  15. How's stat?!published at 16:28 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Asad Shafiq's average against every other Test nation is mightily impressive:

    • Bangladesh: 70.20
    • New Zealand: 56.66
    • Australia: 55.00
    • England: 46.72
    • South Africa: 45.40
    • Sri Lanka: 42.11

The only teams he is yet to score a half-century against are Zimbabwe and West Indies.

  16. Pak 178-4published at 16:26 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Pakistan's batsmen always keen to waft outside the off stump but it doesn't always work. Shafiq then beautifully punches down the ground for four - he's done that a few times today - and it foils what would have been a maiden for Jake Ball.

  17. Pak 174-4 (Misbah 55, Shafiq 21)published at 16:23 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

The first maiden since Tea, bowled by Woakes as Misbah sees this one out. Not even an edge past gully to break that up.

  18. Stumped spot-fixing specialpublished at 16:20 British Summer Time 14 July 2016

Have you listened to Stumped's special spot-fixing episode yet? The team revisited the 2010 spot-fixing case with thoughts from Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Agnew and Mohammad Asif. Have a listen over here.

Another four for Shafiq, and would you believe he's open-faced it through slip again? Is there a proper training routine for these shots or do you just wing it each time?

Pakistan have squeezed a lot of runs down to third man today.
