I'd say to Finn, forget your long run. Come in off 15 paces, hurtle in and let the ball go, just run in and bowl fast. Have a short, explosive run-up and let it go. It will bring zip back, and he'll run in and hit the crease hard. You really have to get energy and momentum.

  2. Pak 254-4 (Misbah 91, Shafiq 56)published at 17:31

Finn changes the angle, round the wicket with catchers on the leg side in a bid to unsettle Misbah. He'd have more joy counting the grains of sand on a beach. Misbah, at a virtually silent Lord's, ducks and sways like Neo in The Matrix. New ball due in eight overs. England praying for it.

Ah, the unchanging face of Lord's. A pair of genuine pay-phones, last used in harness some time in July 1998. Still take guineas.

  4. Pak 244-4 (0-4-4-0-4-4)published at 17:25

Misbah is the big cat to Moeen Ali's tiny mouse. You get the feeling he's just pawing, toying with his prey. He's also got more sweeps than Dale Winton's supermarket. First a reverse, then a conventional, then a reverse, then a conventional. Four boundaries. He's taking the mick and he's into the 90s.

There's enough on there for me to think that by days four or five cracks will appear to give the fast bowlers something.

This the closest England have come in the last hour or so, Asad Shafiq edging Stuart Broad past the dive of Alastair Cook. The skipper looked like an extra from Platoon. Not long after, Shafiq moved past 50.

Finn doesn't look like he's in any kind of form, or has confidence with mind or technique. Shafiq has played two drives hasn't he? He's got very efficient front foot movement.

    Pak 224-4

England are leaking runs here, desperately searching for a little inspiration. Finn on to the hips of Misbah, tickled fine for four. All a little leggy from Finn, who trudges back to his mark with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Even his hipster beard looks flat, not like the regal whiskers of Misbah. Half-volley, driven for four by Shafiq. We all need a drink...

That's a very well earned fifty for Asad Shafiq. He looks in top touch, after he did very well in the UAE as well.

    Pak 219-4

I heard earlier today that Asad Shafiq's record at number six is comparable to that of Garfield Sobers. You don't need to be Sobers to belt long-hops for four, which Shafiq does to reach his 14th Test half-century. He and skipper Misbah are putting this deck into context. Plenty more runs to be had out there.

A pigeon on the field at Lord'sImage source, Rex Features

He's nearly hit a pigeon, it just went past the pigeon by a few yards. That would have been a sad moment for Henry, wouldn't it?

  15. Pak 214-4 (partnership 80)published at 17:11

Only a slip and gully for Finn, Thomas the pigeon still patrolling the square in the point region. Banged in by Finn, Shafiq standing up to cut for four, almost hitting Thomas with the ball. Careful, my feathered friend. England are begging for a wicket here, ruing starting this series on the most UAE-like wicket in England.

To this pair, it's worth dangling that carrot of the drive. Sometimes when they're driving from fourth or fifth stump, it's not easy.

Another edge! Broad, camped on the off-stump channel, induces a loose drive from Asad Shafiq, through where second slip would have been. Alastair Cook, at first, throws himself to his right, but his outstretched paw cannot reach the leather. Broad's feral roar heard in Watford. Fast becoming a day of what-ifs for England.

Yaseen Rana: Jake Ball looks a like a big version of Professor Green. Hopefully we'll Read All About It (his future success) in years to come.

Ammar: Misbah and Shafiq partnership is giving me a lot of confidence in this batting line up. If Pak can get to 300, it could get really interesting.

    Meatloaf

Speaking of Meatloaf, I think Paradise... is definitely my favourite track. Bat Out Of A Hell a classic, clearly. He was in both Wayne's World and Fight Club. Finn continues to run in, down the slope. Willing, but struggling for effectiveness. Misbah opens the face and takes four to third man.
