I say Pakistan are having a good morning, but they have romanced Lady Luck. The drop, the flash past the slips, now a pull shot from Hafeez off Ball that almost drops down on to the stumps. The youngster, wearing what looks like a sports bra under his shirt, is begging for that first wicket. He's gone close a couple of times, now asking the question. That's high and possibly leggy.

Chris Woakes for the first time, Masood now getting involved in flirting with the slips with an edge that drops short and scuttles away for four. This is quickly becoming a good morning for Pakistan. England have failed to take the one chance on what looks like a good deck.

That would have been gobbled up by fourth slip.

Ball has got a good rhythm.

He is generating some pace and will be desperate to get that first wicket.

Ball, still in the high 80s, continues, watched from the balcony by a brains trust of Farbrace, French, Gibson and Bayliss. England's cabinet. Lovely from Hafeez once more, another flowing cover drive to a wide half-volley. This is close! Another flash, this time wide of Vince at third slip. Hafeez and Vince playing their own mini-game, starting with this dropped catch from a little while ago...

Outstanding email just sent to all staff at BBC towers. On level nine of the car park, someone has failed to apply the handbrake and their motor has rolled into another, causing chaos. Lord's still in shade, patrons buzzing with first-day excitement. Over-pitched from Broad, Hafeez easing through the covers for four. Best shot so far.

Ball to left-hander Masood as the sun briefly dips behind a cloud. Short leg, three slips, the big hair of Uncle Bruce French watching from the England balcony. Decent pace from Ball, just a smidge under 90mph.

Hafeez couldn't resist himself, he went hard at the ball.

Vince is standing up a bit but so he didn't get much reaction time.

It went quite quickly but Vince got a good hand on it.

    Not easy.

Chance! A difficult one, but you see them taken. Mohammad Hafeez is given a life by James Vince. A big drive, a thick edge, Vince dives to his left at third slip. He gets low, thrusting out a hand, but the ball just doesn't stick. Looking at replays, it would have been an absolute stunner, so not too much blame to be attached.

Ball has got a good grunt as he releases the ball from a very high, upright action. Slightly angled run, army, wide of the crease with the ball angled down the slope. He induces an inside edge from Masood, one that has heads in hands in the slips.

Filling up slowly at HQ, the members in their egg and bacon finery shuffling into the sanctum of the pavilion, a few early pints being liberated around the back of the Tavern stand, over-excited kids running tip cricket games on the concourses around the Nursery ground. The smell of sun-cream and coffee in the air, the rustle of newspapers and radio earpieces being unwrapped.

It really is a matter of national importance. Putting aside the strangeness of that ritual, it's got me wondering about what other pre-match routines there are out there. Let me know what you do before cricket - it doesn't have to be a Test match. Broad gets some extra bounce across Masood, but the tall, slender leftie knows where his off stump is and will only play when absolutely necessary.

Done with the City: Pre-Test match ritual eyebrow pluck complete. No recollection of how this started but is now a matter of national importance.

On a posh balcony, Sourav Ganguly is only a few seats away from Sir John Major. That would be a meeting of minds. Shan Masood, who went to Durham University, looks better against Ball, while Hafeez eases a leggy delivery off his pads down the slope for four. Despite the green-induced movement, it looks a morning to be batting.

This is good from Broad, previously the baby of the England team but now looking positively middle-aged compared to the fresh-faced Ball. On to the hips of Hafeez, worked for a couple to get Pakistan under way.
