Looking again, it was a nothing shot from Hafeez. He wasn't fully attacking the ball, merely trying to turn in off his hips. He got himself into a real tangle to a delivery that wasn't nearly short enough. Once again, it's Chris Woakes, a man who you would trust to push your grandma's wheelchair. Younus Khan, touring England for the umpteenth time, is the new man.

That is a gift, a real mistake from Hafeez.

Once you get in as an opening batsman you have really got to make it count.

That is just what England needed.

    Hafeez c Bairstow b Woakes 40 (Pak 51-2)

Chris Woakes strikes again! Mohammad Hafeez plays one stroke too many and England have their second wicket. Just short from Woakes, but not short enough for Hafeez to be playing a manufactured pull shot. A leading edge, miles into the sky above Lord's. When it comes down it's got snow on it, but Jonny Bairstow has the big paws underneath to safely snaffle.

Mohammad Hafeez won't die wondering. He's playing all the right shots, but not necessarily in the right order. Only the slightest hint of width from Woakes, but Hafeez is leaning back to slash high over the slips for four. He's had a life, remember....

It has been a tremendous first hour. Those that have bowled a bit quicker have got something out of the wicket.

Pace is very important here at Lord's.

Hafeez is such a dangerous player.

That opportunity Vince dropped was difficult but you don't want to give him too many opportunities.

  9. Pak 46-1published at 12:14

Hostility from Steven Finn, hurrying Hafeez into a hook shot and bringing a stifled appeal when the ball ends in the gloves of Jonny Bairstow. Nothing doing. Finn, though, can't follow it up and a leg-stump half-volley is whipped through mid-wicket for four.

Woakes after the break, now with the benefit of the slope to move the ball away from this pair of right-handers. Angled run towards the red-brick pavilion, blue sky and fluffy clouds overhead. Very full to Azhar Ali, targeting the pads, Azhar jamming down to keep the ball out.

    Drinks breakpublished at 12:04

    Pak 42-1

Steven Finn for the first time, a man perhaps competing with Woakes for a place in the side when James Anderson and Ben Stokes are fit. He's in familiar surroundings on his home ground, but starts with a short ball that Hafeez helps to the square leg fence for four. End of the first hour, time for drinks.

  16. Pak 38-1 (Woakes 2-1-4-1)published at 12:00

Azhar Ali is the new man, a right-hander greeted by four slips. Looking again at the Masood wicket, the ball pitched on leg stump, and carried on with the angle. This summer, Chris Woakes has created a habit of making things happen.

That gathered pace off the wicket and flew to Masood. It was a good delivery from Woakes, it rushed him.

That was what England needed because they’ve bowled well but just not had the luck.

  19. wicket

    Masood c Bairstow b Woakes 7 (Pak 38-1)

If you want a job doing, ask Chris Woakes. The man who is fast becoming very reliable for England makes the breakthrough, finding some extra bounce to send Shan Masood on his way. Up the slope, across the left-hander, Masood can't resist a poke, sending the thin edge through to Jonny Bairstow. England strike.
