Summary

  • Woakes takes five wickets; has 11 in the match

  • Moeen removes Younus and Misbah

  • First innings: Pakistan 339ao, England 272ao

  1. Pak 173-6 (lead by 240)published at 17:20

Only one slip in place as Ball lumbers in to Sarfraz. Alastair Cook is temporarily off the field, so Joe Root is the man waving his arms when Yasir gets back on strike. Huge, huge appeal when Yasir plays a big drive, with Joel Wilson unmoved. Whether Yasir hit it or not, it didn't even carry to Jonny Bairstow. No reviews left for England, by the way.

JoElle: Chris Woakes and Ian Botham have never been seen in the same room, at the same time. Coincidence? I think not…

  3. Pak 172-6 (Sarfraz 31, Yasir 2)published at 17:16

England's next task is to remove Sarfraz, who continues to move around like a man allergic to his crease. For all the chat of Pakistan's long tail, Yasir looks like a man willing to dig in, even if he ducks so low to a Woakes bumper that England appeal for lbw. Speaking of Woakes, here's the ball that got Shafiq in his last over.

This is quite a promotion for Yasir Shah, who batted at number 11 in the first innings. The wicket has done little to turn up the volume at Lord's, the background din remains fairly muted. The crowd does get involved with an lbw shout for Ball against Yasir, but that's leggy. If we were at Trent Bridge of further north right now, we'd be bathed in song.

Chris Woakes made good runs with the bat too - he played lovely. He looked comfortable, wasn't hurried and wasn't frightened of the leg-spinner. He's made himself a really good cricketer now. He's a different bowler now to the one who made his debut in 2013 against Australia at The Oval, he has more pace for a start.

  7. Pak 168-6 (Woakes 13-5-26-3)published at 17:07

I may be doing Chris Woakes a dis-service, because he's managed to make that come back up the slope. Movement off the seam, back in to the right-hander, taking the very top of off stump. Woakes has nine in the match. Yasir Shah, such a big role to play in the rest of this contest, is the new man.

He played outside that. It kept on going, not doing a great deal, and it is a surprise because Shafiq is a lovely player - he and Joe Root are the best technical batsmen in the match. England have to grasp this moment now.

    Shafiq b Woakes 49 (Pak 168-6)

There's the inspiration! How England needed that and, yet again, it is Chris Woakes who delivers. A change of angle, delivered from wide of the crease, through the defences of Asad Shafiq, who had looked utterly immovable. Has it kept a touch low? I don't think so. Shafiq has missed a straight one.

Danny Hussain: Pakistan have 6 batsmen who average 40+. In Test cricket it's not just Misbah.

A cheese board, James? Really? Is this another example of unnecessary amounts of food being taken to a day at the Test match? Singles here and there for Pakistan, death by a thousand cuts for England. Lord's hum definitely quieter. Where's the inspiration?

At Lord's today... remembered the cheese board, forgot the cheese.

Thomas the pigeon is fielding at shortish point as Woakes glides in to the shuffly Sarfraz. Careful, Thomas. You should really have a helmet on if you're going to field there. It's tight stuff, but England need wickets. If Pakistan are still batting tonight, that lead could be on the way to 300.

When you see somebody like Jake Ball deliver one and it keeps low, you see all of the batsman glancing at each other.

  15. Pak 161-5 (Shafiq 48, Sarfraz 24)published at 16:51

I've been trying to get reports from my club in Stoke-on-Trent. Efforts to get the score out of them have failed, but my mum tells me it's raining in ST6. Conclusion? The match has been abandoned but they are keeping it quiet so as not to alert wives and girlfriends. Jake Ball returns, getting an edge from Shafiq that falls short of second slip. All a bit flat from England.

The ball seems to have gone a bit softer, there's no zip and Pakistan are just milking England's bowling.

  17. Pak 160-5 (lead by 227)published at 16:46

England turn to Chris Woakes, who is looking to become only the fifth England bowler this decade to take 10 wickets in a Test. He, though, is greeted by Shafiq, who looks head and shoulders Pakistan's best batsman. Short and wide, cut for four. A song from the handful of visiting fans in the ground. Even now it's a tricky chase for England.

You don't mind it when Shafiq takes a single because you suspect something will happen with Sarfraz. But if he stays around for an hour, Pakistan will be out of sight.

  19. Pak 153-5 (55 overs)published at 16:40

Sarfraz Ahmed is dangerous in this situation. Half an hour of the fidget and Pakistan will be pulling away. He clips Moeen through mid-wicket, Alastair Cook chasing through treacle. Bit of an escort service that from the skipper, including despairing dive that fails to prevent the boundary. Enough now, Moeen?

Shafiq has impressed me - he's like Misbah in the fact he's a rock the team can rely on.
