These pair have played nicely, proper Test cricket. Of the first four wickets, England have made three errors. They can't afford many more mistakes, if any.

Given we are in replay mode for the moment, just being shown the wicket of Alex Hales on the telly. Described by our pundits rightly as a poor shot as he fetched from way outside off and sliced it to slip. Something in his mindset perhaps? He got out in a similar manner in the first innings.

One of my sisters-in-law used to be Hales' psychology teacher from school. Perhaps I should give her a ring and see if she can't be of use again.

Gary meant to do this. Honest...

And Jonny meant to do this...

That cricket ball looks every bit of its 36 overs old. Yasir licks his fingers in a very Anil Kumble type manner, just a flash, a brush, gentle. A gentle sweep from Ballance to the leg side scares short leg away and a misfield at short fine-leg brings two.

You just need the bowlers in the game, and then you get these tense matches where you're not sure. When it's flat you make zillions of runs and I was happy. But it's not the best cricket match.

I wonder what gives Amir's hair that lovely slightly orangey tint? A bit of henna in his shampoo? It bounces this way and that in his run up, which is from wide of the stumps. He tries both over and round the wicket as well but both Bairstow and Ballance solid in defence. A bit of cloud creeps in from one side of Lord's.

England have to look at this game in small partnerships. They should be thinking, let's get another 25 etc.

Must be said Yasir could be in for a toil here even with a change of ends. These two England batsmen look relatively comfortable. Yasir sends the needles up on the rev counter but can't quite keep the batsmen from scoring. Could Yasir be a bit worried? Certainly a few beads of sweat on that forehead.

Mohammad Amir, who one of our readers likened to the footballer David Silva, returns for a new spell. My guess is it's a ploy to get Yasir to the other end. Either way, Amir gives away just one run.

Wahab, teeth almost crushing his lips in aggression, bowls full to Bairstow who slices it past third slip for four. This weather, I can confidently report, is possibly spring conditions from a sub-continental perspective. And when you've been on an army boot camp in it, as Pakistan have been, it's a walk in the park eh?

Wahab has his head in his hands as a low delivery goes off Bairstow's pad; half an appeal but it's caught a bit of the bat.

There are no terrors in this pitch for playing seamers. It demands a degree of patience, and concentration, you have to pick the ball to hit. But it's not moving all over the place.

Gentle applause as Bairstow drives Yasir through cover for a single. Not sure why. Yasir has packed the leg-side field for left-handed Ballance including a short leg for good measure. Two from the over and the sun is beating down like a very hot drum at Lord's. Glad we've got massive 4 and 6 cards for cover.

The ball is reversing and Wahab is putting in a good spell here. He's a great trier and he's physcially built to bowl long spells. England, on the other hand, have been sensible against Yasir Shah and played him quite nicely.

  15. Eng 114-4published at 14:15 British Summer Time 17 July 2016

So what's needed now for England? Dull-as-dishwater defence? Or a bit of aggression to send the field back?

The stocky figure of Wahab keeps two slips against Ballance and it nearly pays off as the batsman slashes at a wide delivery and it flies over the cordon for four. Younus strangely ducked under it, kind of like you do involuntarily when driving through a tunnel. Just me?

I'm watching Gary Ballance, and I think his movement at the crease is not as apparent as it was before. It's still there, but not as pronounced.

Misbah is slowly becoming my most stylish cricketer. Not only has he got a beard to compete against the best illustrations on the instructions of my electric trimmer, he also has a very snazzy watch.

Cook may want to invest in a good one himself. Commander Misbah contemplates his field, as Yasir concedes three runs. Half a lazy shout for lbw on Ballance to go with it.

You've been warned, Wahab. Or has he? Umpire Kumar Dharmasena appeared to indicate his disapproval towards the Pakistan seamer for running on to the middle of the pitch. Amazing, eh? How the officials can spot these things without the help of a great big virtual red zone indicating said area.

Or maybe he was just talking to someone else. Either way, Wahab probably needs to be a bit more careful.
