"Roooooot" rings around Old Trafford as Root pounces on Yasir's first loose ball to cut for four. Yasir, sweatband on each wrist, tightens up. Root, some whispy stubble poking through his chinstrap, pinches a single to cover. I sympathise with Joe Root. Facial hair is a mystery to us both.

Liam Thom: Before everyone slags off Hales, did he not outscore Cook against Sri Lanka? Sometimes you just get good balls!!

Reece Smith: Had enough of Hales playing test cricket, it's just not for him. Leave him doing the short game stuff, that's what he's good at.

Oliver Ridout: Would be great if those saying Hales should go, after a few bad scores, could identify someone better suited to take his place.

Wahab after the break, the quickness of the pitch highlighted by Alastair Cook being done for pace even though the speedo only registers 83mph. Looking at the ball, Pakistan have already got one side shiny and the other roughed up. They are thinking reverse.

Having lunch with the family at a pub in Marlow when I noticed Andrew Strauss was playing cricket in the garden with his kids. My daughter and I joined in. All the speculation at the time was that Jason Gillespie was to become England coach. Strauss told me not to believe everything I read in the paper. Trevor Bayliss appointed a couple of days later.

I think Joe Root will keep the mow over mid-wicket in his locker for a while.

Slip and a short leg for Yasir, who will be targeting the pads of left-hander Cook. The skipper works through the on side to pretty reasonable applause - tension levels have cranked up now Yasir is on. As the sun shines even brighter, Root defends up to the drinks break.

Not any real pace from Wahab. This will be key for England with Yasir Shah on. If they can nullify him they can get a good score on this wicket.

  8. Eng 47-1published at 12:00

Wahab is clinging on to his hair. Two receding channels run backwards as he charges in towards Alastair Cook. Angled run, very length, skipper picking up a single off his toes to complete the first hour. Now it might be time for Yasir....

You'd think Wahab Riaz would fancy bowling on this surface. It would certainly reverse swing.

  10. Eng 44-1published at 11:56

There is a change, but it's not Yasir Shah. Wahab Riaz completes the trio of left-armers.

I think I'd bring on Yasir Shah now, get him an early look-in. He took 10 wickets last week and you'd fancy he's still in the mind of the England players.

Misbah has posted a deep point for Cook. Odd one on the first morning of a Test. Yes, the skipper is strong there, but how about asking Rahat Ali not to bowl long hops outside off stump? Hot inside OT, warm enough for one lady to need shelter from the sun underneath a pink umbrella. Costa del Manchester.

He's worn one right on the shoulder. Old Trafford is the kind of venue where you do have to wear a few. Root did well there, he kept his hands down.

  14. Eng 43-1published at 11:50

There's a man back on the square leg fence for Root, who was caught hooking in the second innings at Lord's. No hooking at the minute, just another dreamy drive down the ground for four more. Ooofff, there's the bumper. Root thinks about playing, remembers the catcher and cops one on the shoulder. Amir bowling with some venom here.

2000, Morgan's Bay, South Africa. Beach cricket match between local villages. I ended up opening with Peter Kirsten, who hit the third ball a long way into the lagoon... whereupon we ran 14 while someone swam to get it. Lovely local rule...

Now then, what have we got here? There seems to be part of the ground, right on the boundary edge, that has sofas for spectators. White picket fence, some fake grass, white leather seats. More Wimbledon than Old Trafford. Cook tickles Rahat fine for four then scythes another cut to the boundary. Skipper in good order.

Alex Hales is a big lad. If you look at tall batsmen, like Matthew Hayden, he'd bat outside his crease to intimidate the bowlers. Hales bats well inside his crease.

    Amir 5-1-16-1

I've just seen a replay of the complete over from Amir to Hales. So often the ball was pushed across (including the drop at gully), with the devastating inswinger coming from the final ball. It was quick too. Hales bashed his bat on the ground in frustration. He was completely set up.

Jarleth Eaton: Think it's time to admit the Hales experiment hasn't worked. Failed against top bowling both home and abroad.

David Townend: Is it too early to open the Cook's opening partner inquest?

Michael Johnson: Alex Hales simply does not have the temperament to be a Test match player.

  20. Eng 30-1published at 11:35

Geoffrey, as ever, is right. Hales moved after the ball was past him, the back leg coming round. No stride forwards to play the delivery, no balance, not the way to play late swing. Amir didn't have the best game at Lord's because there was little conventional swing. There's definitely some this morning. Joe Root is the new man, playing a lovely straight drive to get going.
