It's the sort of shot that tailenders like me or club cricketers would love to play, just once!

Fifty partnership between England's pair of Double Os (think about it). If you think that England's batting order looks top heavy with Cook opening and Root at three, you might well be right, but the hope is that they spend plenty of time at the crease together. Root celebrates with yet another of those handsome back-foot drives. The Ryan Gosling of cricket strokes.

It was more than alright from Root, it was a beautiful shot - how he judged that to perfection. Every time the ball has been in his area of strength he has done something with it.

Pretty soon we're going to run out of cricketing advice, so we might have to broaden it out. Cooking, relationships, travel. We'll see what we can do. More glorious stuff from Root, another back-foot punch that scorches the turf on the way to the fence. Very Root. Under 20 minutes to go until lunch. England's morning so far.

Yasir, pretty innocuous this morning, is withdrawn in favour of Mohammad Amir, who switches ends. He charges away from the media centre, watched on by the Cookie Monster. I just wonder if that Cookie Monster outfit is an elaborate disguise for someone who shouldn't be there. Salman Butt? KP? Nick Compton?

James Whitaker, England national selector, is at Old Trafford, getting stuck into a drink. After the James Anderson affair, Whitaker probably needs a few stiff ones. He's with ECB chairman Colin Graves. "They're not going to sack me, are they Colin? Do you want another drink?" Wahab strives for a full length, but there's not a great deal going on for him.

So far, England have dealt with Yasir's good balls and punished the bad. Another is too short, allowing Cook to swivel on a pull that clatters into the boundary boards. There's the first sign of some turn, while Root then has to show quick hands to not come a cropper to a slider.

Root does that brilliantly. Most of us mortals, when we get on the back foot against quick bowlers, would have a horizontal bat. But he does it with a straight bat, like it says in the MCC manuals.

We've seen enough this morning to learn that wickets should be sold incredibly dearly. In the Old Trafford sunshine, bowling looks hard work on a surface currently offering as much assistance as a moody teenager. Still Wahab as Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur searches his notes. To a delivery that looked a no-ball (not called), Root plays a Tendulkar-esque back-foot drive for four.

It's good fun watching Yasir. He's a quick leg-spinner. Shane Warne would just walk up to the crease because he had strong fingers and shoulders. Yasir bounds in, and runs three or four paces before he delivers.

  17. Eng 55-1published at 12:21

Yasir walks, then bounds, then leaps into a whippy action. Touch of flight and drift, then a shorter one speared in to Root, who is trying his best to play with a straight bat. Keep the cut shot in the locker to Yasir unless it's very wide.

Wahab charges in to Root, testing out the middle of the deck with a bumper so high it is called wide by umpire Kumar Dharmasena. When he's not dishing out the chin music, Wahab is wide of the off stump, with Root not interested in playing. The ball has stopped moving in the air. For now.

Yasir is very accurate but that was wide and a little bit short. Root is a very good judge of length against spin.
