Very well bowled. But Hales' foot goes a foot and a bit outside the crease. When you play like that with short footwork, you have to play away from your pad so far forward. There's a big gap between bat and pad - it goes through that gap. If you stride further forward, the bat and pad is together.

    Hales b Amir 10 (Eng 25-1)

Bowled him! The full pint! Mohammad Amir serves up a beauty to knock over Alex Hales, off stump on the ground and middle not in the best of health either. It's a lovely shape, coming back in to the right-hander, but Hales' defence was pretty flimsy. No feet, huge gap between bat and pad, enough space to drive a tank through. Pakistan strike.

The foot doesn't go across enough. It's not full enough. It should be a foot and a half nearer. Hales takes it on in one-day cricket - it goes for four. In Test cricket it's not that easy.

Chance! Alex Hales gets a life with a flash through gully. Dragged wide by Mohammad Amir, he plays a big drive, the ball flying towards the fielder, who is pretty close. Asad Shafiq throws up a hand, but it's through him in no time. If he'd been standing one pace to the right, it would have taken his head off. Not a great shot from Hales.

Mike Fisher: Joined an impromptu game at a friend's wedding. Unfortunately one batsman let go of the bat mid-shot and hit the bride's grandma.

Alex Tait: After last year's Cheltenham festival, we played using crates from the local Co-op as bats. Management not too impressed!

Shot. Too short from Rahat Ali, allowing Cook to hammer a cut through point for four. Rahat picked up three wickets in the second innings at Lord's, but actually bowled some dross. There's a little bit more there. The Cookie Monster is in the crowd. Good to see you, Mr Monster.

This looks as if it's one of the best Test match pitches for batting I've seen in a while. Often we say pitches are full of cracks and dry but this looks an absolute belter. It looks worth a bat.

Amir gets his first look at Hales, who scratches at his guard in the Manchester sun. Nice from Amir, getting the ball to go across the right-hander when he might have expected it to come back in. Decent start with the ball by the tourists, but this deck is resembling a slab of the A500. Good road, the A500. Links J15 and J16 on the M6, right through Stoke-on-Trent. God's country.

1991, West Indies touring England, playing a warm-up game against Hampshire. Early on the first day, teams warming-up pre-match and a pal and I approached one of their fringe players (when people were allowed to wander on the outfield before matches, even with the players around!) and asked him if he wanted us to give him some catching practice. He declined but very kindly offered to hit some for us, which he proceeded to do for 5-10 minutes, giving us both a bit of a work out and lot of enjoyment. A year later this player became a regular in the team and started making some serious runs – it was Brian Lara.

This is where Rahat will be dangerous to Hales, moving the ball back into a big front pad. More swing, an appeal, but it's done a bit too much and is going down the leg side. Hales refuses a single to mid-off that probably was on, then clips to fine leg for four. Joe Root, pads on, sits next to Ben Stokes. I'll be honest, Joe doesn't look too thrilled with Stokes' chat.

This is Alastair Cook's 50th Test as England captain. He is the joint third on the list with Andrew Strauss. Only Michael Vaughan (51) and Michael Atherton (54) have captained England more.

Lovely hum at OT as spectators continue to take their seats. One chap, presumably a stag, is riding an inflatable duck. Two others, big hair and suits, might have come as the Beatles. I can't tell if they are in fancy dress or not. Amir, suncream on his face, is a touch too short to Cook, who can leave on length.

The tall Rahat Ali shares the new ball, also finding swing, this time back into the right-handed Alex Hales. Short leg in place and in the game. Hales, tattoos on one arm, bandage on the other, reaches to play an expansive drive at a wide one. Patience, Alex.

England's batsmen have to get started, get their footwork going. The pitch looks good, really really good for batting. It's a great toss to win.

  16. Eng 8-0published at 11:04

Swing for Amir, who got a few boos when his name is announced. Away from Cook, who angles the bat to get four through gully to get himself under way. This is a good stuff from Amir, though. Channel, movement, to play or not to play? Yet more decisions for the skipper, who gets another boundary via an outside edge.

If England start thinking better, that it's a five-day Test not a one-day Test, they will do better. They have to bat with a great deal more common sense. Then they'll get bigger totals on the board and Pakistan will be under pressure.

Bit of gardening for Cook, who then takes guard. Alex Hales asks the umpire to cut something off his bat - could he not have done that in the dressing room? Mohammad Amir is at the end of his run. Three slips.

Big, big queues outside the ground. Those lining up with be able to hear Jerusalem, which is being belted out by Laura Wright. Misbah leads his men into an arena showing plenty of empty seats, followed by Alastair Cook and Alex Hales.
