What to make of all that? When you win the toss and field then bowl the opposition out for 297 on the first day you're the happier side, right? Pakistan should sleep sounder, but I suspect there will be encouragement for the bowlers throughout this match. We could be in for another cracker.

Pakistan have got to do their batting in the first innings. If they're going to go big they've got to do it in the first innings. I don't think their decision to bowl first has been vindicated yet but Misbah will feel pretty good. That engine room has really got to fire for Pakistan tomorrow.

Oh yes! A brilliant celebration from Sohail Khan, who takes the press-ups a stage further. In his first Test for five years, he picks up his first five-fer and doesn't only do the push-ups, but adds a hand clap between each one. Showing off. With 5-96, he deserves the applause.

That's a nice friendly day's cricket finished isn't it? It's been a fascinating day - some lovely strokeplay. It's been difficult for bowlers as well with blustery conditions. England will know they could have got more. But they've got a score they can bowl to.

It looked pretty plumb and the replay confirms as much. Shape back into James Anderson, crashing into leg stump, England 297 all out. That will be stumps at the end of Pakistan's day.

Good shape back in to Jimmy Anderson.

No Jimmy! Is Steven Finn's fun over? Is Anderson lbw? Does Sohail Khan have a five-fer?

Steven Finn! On the up through mid-on for four! That's why England aren't declaring. He even holds the pose. If you get a picture of that, he'll sign it for you. Now we're so close to 18:30, I'm pretty sure that Pakistan can't bat tonight. Now Finn's pulling for four! It's like watching Kevin Pietersen. Get him up the order. Now we know why he got the nod over Jake Ball. It's the dashing late-order strokeplay.

What Pakistan have done, is give themselves a chance. You don't want to judge before both teams have bowled and 287 is very competitive, but it's also below-par. With what England have in the lineup they should be getting more.

Shot! Jimmy Anderson gives a short ball the complete beans, getting four over the slips. Then a shimmy, a flash for a single to third man, where fielder Sohail Khan looks like his body could fall to pieces at any moment. There are five overs left in the day. England could bowl a maximum of two of them.

STONEY: I wonder if Jimmy will get the reverse sweep out for the new ball?

bROCKerz: Could certainly do with the Burnley Lara right now! I hear he hit a pretty decent score at this ground once upon a time.

Serious question, but would Pakistan be better off hanging the ball outside off stump for the remainder of the day? Come back and finish this innings tomorrow? I like a good outside-the-box theory. Intentionally or not, Sohail does just that to Finn, who drives like a man trying to nick off. He follows that by taking an off-stump half-volley through mid-wicket in the style of Viv Richards. Shot of the day.

The Pakistan batsmen will be looking at this thinking they've got a few overs left if they come out to bat. The number three will think 'oh I'll send the nightwatchman out'. Rahat Ali could be the man for that.

James Anderson shuffles out to the crease, probably thinking he'd rather be bowling than batting at this moment. Looking again at that Moeen shot, if he'd middled it he would have damaged the ball. Amir consistently goes past Anderson's outside edge. Their openers probably don't mind that - they'd prefer to be strapping the pads on first thing in the morning.

He's made a very valuable 63 runs. He'll be a bit disappointed with that wicket. He might have wanted to have another look at that. But the new ball does the trick again.

No doubt about this one. Moeen Ali plays a champagne drive at Mohammad Amir, only succeeding in getting an edge behind to the big paws of Sarfraz. England nine down, it's been Pakistan's day. Now then (and be honest), who thought that bowling first was a good idea?

Sohail will be delighted with his work. That little five-fer would have sat well with his dinner.

When the ball hits Steven Finn on the flap of the pad, you know that height is going to be an issue. Umpire's call reprieves the big man, who celebrates with a flash outside the off stump. No bat, but satisfying all the same.

This looks close. Sohail Khan shares the new ball, ending Yasir's 25-over spell. Finn the batsman. Look straight, but is it high?
