Amir 14-2-46-1
I'm told that Azhar Ali had just over 0.6 seconds to react at third slip. Broad is a man who flashes hard, so Azhar's hands are probably still tingling as Steven Finn takes guard. Curious period this. Pakistan are striving for wickets, but would they really fancy facing a couple of overs tonight?

It was short and wide with the new ball, a bit of swing. Broad had a bit of foot movement. He had a bit of a flick at it, but it was a good catch.

It went very quickly to third slip who caught it above his head. It was a very good catch as it could easily have gone over for four.
Broad c Azhar b Amir 13 (Eng 276-8)
One delivery! It takes one delivery with the new ball for Mohammad Amir to dismiss Stuart Broad. Outside off stump, hint of movement, a wild slash to Azhar Ali at third slip. It's a good catch above his head by Azhar, the ball was travelling quickly. You just didn't get the impression Broad would last long against the new ball, did you?
Eng 276-7
Mohammad Amir bowls one delivery with the old bowl, then asks for the new nut. Stuart Broad on strike.

I would ideally want this pair to continue till the end - somehow survive and maybe look at a different strategy in the morning.
80 overs
Last over before the new ball is available, delivered by Yasir. In the posh seats, a man who resembles Mike Flowers (blond hair, sharp suit), has a proper face on. Rains squalls around, Broad tucks a couple off his toes, then the sun tries to poke through. I may give up on the weather updates. It's making me look like a clown.

Mike Fennell: I'm three miles from Edgbaston and its steady drizzle...
Not long ago we had that little technological outage (apparently the hamsters that run on wheels to power things temporarily went on strike) so you may not have seen the Gary Ballance wicket. Here it is. Speaking of hamsters, Sami Aslam does some fielding that would embarrass Nibbles. Cut from Moeen, Aslam's long barrier resembles a poppadom. Four. Moeen follows that up with a dreamy straight drive. Four more. It's raining, by the way.

England just getting to where they want to be. Another 40 or 50 runs and they might start feeling comfortable.
Moeen 53, Broad 12
Whallop! Stuart Broad fancies a bit of Yasir, perhaps mindful he might soon be fending off the new nut. A heave into the leg side, towards an illuminated floodlight, just evading the lurking fielder and skipping to the boundary. I just wonder if bad light will become an issue before we get these final 12 overs in today.

You'd fancy taking the new ball - just to hurry things up.
Sad news about Archie, the feline who started our chat about times you've helped cricketers. Poor Archie.
Back at Edgbaston, Rahat Ali scurries in like a man running for the last bus. Wind high, light low, Rahat nips one away from the grope of the flat-footed Moeen. It really feels like a time to be bowling. The new ball is due in three overs.
Yasir Shah was the bowler who lost a scalp when that Moeen decision was overturned. He keeps twirling in the gloom - it's got very dark of late - targeting the pads of this pair of left-handers (Stuart Broad has joined Moeen at the crease). I promised news of Archie the cat and I'm afraid it's not good...
Eng 256-7
Well batted, Moeen Ali. He goes to a sixth Test half-century by clipping Rahat Ali wristily through the leg side for four. England have faith in Moeen, faith they showed after his horror shot in the first Test at Lord's. He repaid them with five wickets at Old Trafford and now this. More often than not he finds a way to contribute.
Firstly, the wicket. Chris Woakes edged a shortish ball from Rahat Ali behind. Then, Moeen Ali was the man confusingly reprieved after being given out caught off Yasir Ali. Replays showed there was not bat or glove on the ball, so the lbw was checked. Even though it was umpire's call (and Moeen was given out on the pitch), the decision was overturned, Moeen survived because on-field umpire Bruce Oxenford felt the lbw wasn't out. Hope you've followed all that. Speaking of Moeen....
Right then, we're back. Apologies about that. Lots to tell you about. A wicket, a reprieve, and news of Archie the cat.
Moeen 38, Woakes 1
Yasir, lips pursed, bundles in as the wind whips at the players' shirts. Woakes is content to lunge forward until he gets off the mark with a pushed single into the off side off the final ball of the over.
