    133 overs

Four dots from Finn to Sarfraz. A scampered single off the fifth ball. Rahat edges the final delivery just short of the slip cordon. We've reached stalemate here. Maybe the players will shake hands on a draw soon.

RichWho2: 90 is a match winning lead if Vince & Hales fail again.

Jonathan Davies: Wouldn't fancy chasing any more than 200 to win this. Moeen Ali will be key.

    Sarfraz 40, Rahat 4

Sarfraz is almost in a different postcode by the time he connects with the ball - or doesn't connect, whichever the case may be. He's on the charge, literally and metaphorically, skipping down the track to Stuart Broad. He swishes at thin air with one sweep-cum-pull from down on one knee to a good-length delivery outside off stump. Interesting.

Rahat does his job off the last two balls - and even manages a couple of runs himself courtesy of a textbook forcing shot.

It's been a good fightback from England. It was fairly predictable once you get rid of Misbah and Younus. It's all about this last partnership now - it could be annoying if these two stick around.

The atmosphere at Edgbaston has gone from carnival to funeral in the space of a wicket. You can't blame England for their tactics - their priority is to limit Pakistan's lead - but it's done nothing for the excitement levels among the crowd. Finn gets two balls at Sohail, but can make neither of them count.

The lead is healthy for Pakistan. The more they stay at the crease, the rougher the pitch gets, which means more bite for the leggie. And come day four or five there will be reverse swing for the pacers.

England spread the field and Sarfraz - now in one-day mode - turns down easy runs to the boundary riders. After four balls, the field comes in... Sarfraz pierces the covers for a single... and Rahat keeps out the last delivery. There's a pattern developing here.

Most wickets in a series for England against Pakistan:

    • 23: James Anderson (2010)
    • 22: Graeme Swann (2010), Fred Trueman (1962)
    • 21: Chris Woakes (2016)

Can Finn mop up what remains of the tail? Not with leg-side filth like that, he can't. Or perhaps we should give him the benefit of the doubt and say he's targeting leg stump as Sarfraz jumps about in his crease. A leg bye off the fifth ball allows Finn one delivery at number 11 Rahat Ali. He defends it with the minimum of fuss.

Now it depends on Sarfraz. Sohail Khan only had one ball to see off and he messed it up quite badly.

Sohail lbw Broad 7 (Pak 385-6)

No bat, not outside the line, impact in line, not too high - which means one thing. Sohail Khan departs for seven, Pakistan have lost four wickets for 28 runs. And England, remarkably, look like limiting the tourists' lead to under 100.

Was Anderson right to be taken out of the attack? Or were the umpires overly strict with their interpretation of the danger area? It seems Anderson and Root are having that very debate in the slip cordon. Meanwhile, Sarfraz takes one on the arm from a Finn bumper, forces through point for two then drives wonderfully for four through extra-cover. He even pinches the strike with a single off the last ball. Finn is left kicking the dirt. A gift.

Woakes searching for his fourth wicket - and perhaps a sneaky five-for. Sohail collects three more through the leg side. Pakistan's lead grows a little more. Let's have some drinks.

Plenty to keep aficionados of the Laws of Cricket busy this afternoon. First, Bairstow's run-out of Yasir Shah courtesy of his elbow. Here's what Law 28.1 says...

The wicket is put down if a bail is completely removed from the top of the stumps, or a stump is struck out of the ground... or (v) by a fielder with his hand or arm, providing that the ball is held in the hand or hands so used, or in the hand of the arm so used.

Sohail Khan is Sarfraz Ahmed's latest partner - he starts with four off his pads before Finn resorts to the short stuff. Anderson scratches his stubble in the field.

Jed Court: One of the worst umpiring decisions you will ever see. No wonder Test cricket is losing fans.
