Do you think they don't realise they could actually save the Test match? It went higher than the floodlights. It touched the moon on the way.

Charge! Moeen Ali is on, tempting Sohail with a bit of flight. Forget about saving the match, Sohail won't miss out on the chance for some biffery. Mid-on Steven Finn is briefly interested, but it's a one-bounce four. We're still in the realms of enjoying this last-wicket stand. Give it five overs, though...

Andrew Webb: Think Johnny Allen [16:51] has a short memory - Edgbaston did have an Ashes Test last year - England won the game.

Mark Allen: Someone bowl a Yorker, full and straight!

Moeen Ali is getting loose but, the way this pair are batting, England might have to get Fred Trueman, Derek Underwood and Sydney Barnes into the attack. Alastair Cook has a big grin on his face. It might not be there if Sohail and Rahat hang around for another 10 overs. Broad too wide to draw a batsman of Rahat's class into a stroke. "Don't bowl that filth at me".

Get Moeen on. Get three or four round the bat, long on, mid-wicket. Let him hit a couple of fours and then hole out. They're not going to save the game, they'll just want to have fun.

I never doubted Sohail Khan. Going a long way down the leg side. He celebrates by top edging a bumper over the keeper for four more. Brilliant tail-end biffery.

It might be clipping the stump. I wasn't sure if it was full-on.

Now then. Sohail given not out, but England ready for another look. He's a long way across...

Laura Cooney: Only on @bbctms, external would England be on the verge of winning and the commentators' chat be about shoes.

Angus Hayward: Just need Moeen to get a wicket and then all the bowlers have two. Cracking performance and game by both teams. Bring on the Ashes.

Is anyone else really enjoying this partnership? Sohail, every inch the batsman, eases Woakes through the vacant point region for two. Defence is solid, bad ball being punished, looking miles more likely to score runs than Mohammad Hafeez. Get him up the order.

    20 overs remain

The trumpeter plays the theme from Postman Pat, which has been doctored as a tribute to Stuart Broad. Meanwhile, this Pakistan pair are batting like Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq. Rahat leans back to flay through the covers for four. And again! Over the slips for another boundary! They've added 28. Dig in, lads.

I'll probably start to think about buying some walking boots if this goes down to about 14 overs. Or maybe I'll go it barefoot.

    Eng need 1 wicket

I think Vince copped a blow to the fourth finger on his left hand. Deadly digits. Chris Woakes on, trying to finish the job on his home ground. Sohail, warming to his task of saving this game, stands up to belt through the covers for four. That might be the shot of the day. I'm not against seeing him bat for a while.

And again! Top edge over the keeper for four! He even gives Woakes a stare. Keep going, lad.

Rob Meech: More than 80,000 people at Edgbaston this week to see a thrilling match. Do we still think Test cricket is dying?

Johnny Allen: Edgbaston once again producing the best Test match of a series - still bitter about not having an Ashes Test here last year.

That could have been it! Rahat Ali flashes, James Vince jumps at third slip, but pushes it over the bar. Again, it would have been a blinder because the ball went very quickly. Vince has hurt himself too. He runs straight off the field. Dislocation?

Now the Barmies are into Delilah. Probably some Stoke City fans in there. Rahat Ali is about to get some leg theory from Stuart Broad. Two leg gullies, a short leg. Bodyline. Rahat, though, is getting his lanky frame to duck and weave. Only 22 overs separate Rahat and Sohail from the greatest escape Test cricket has ever seen...

Oh so nearly the winning moment. Rahat Ali turns his back on an Anderson short ball and almost pops a chance to short leg. Rahat, though, is keen to show he's got a shot, popping a drive through the covers for a couple. Brilliant noise in Edgbaston now. Broad Street will be lively tonight.
