So where do we even begin with this session? Pakistan lost six wickets for just 79 runs in 34 overs. For the twitter generation, that may do as a summary, but for fans of longer reading, we have to look into how England have attacked with their field placings, attacked through Moeen, and struck with their pacemen when the iron was hot. The latter emphasised by the mini-resurgence of Steven Finn, who broke his drought with two wickets.

It's just the power of positive thought. Once England started thinking they could winning this game, which happened about 40 minutes ago, they have looked like champions.

Eng need 3 wickets to win

I've got to say, amid all the chaos of Pakistan's batting, that Mohammad Amir has a very textbook back foot drive shot. He's got a high bat position and a snappy swing, which is helpful as he strokes a rising ball from Finn to point for four. Not quite Tendulkar-esque, but I wonder what would happen if he ever gave up bowling in favour of batting.

That is also tea, at last. Get those cupcakes in. Six wickets lost in the afternoon session. Chaos.

Pakistan were one down at lunch. In the fourth innings, England have only taken nine wickets or more in the final two sessions of the match to win on three occasions - Sydney 1979, Adelaide 1995, the Wanderers 2005.

Not sure why the crowd's gone back to a gentle murmur. Perhaps miffed at the delayed tea break? Missing out on some cracking cake? On the cake bit, I'd be miffed as well in all honesty. Two hardy Pakistan fans - young ones by the sound of it - continue to keep the faith with shouts of "Pakistan jeetega", Pakistan will win. Yasir gets another bouncer at him, Woakes this time, and looks like he will be facing these for a while.

You have to remember that numbers 10 and 11 are rabbits and ferrets, awful batsmen.

I'm trying to speed eat an orange in anticipation of some speed typing later on as England pile on the pressure. Finn gets four slips and a leg slip to Yasir, and throws in a few short ones. Amir also gets a full slip cordon, but produces an amazing drive to a full delivery that runs through covers for four. Could these two batsmen produce the unlikeliest of fightbacks?

Sam Charlton: I defy anyone who say's Test match cricket is boring. This game has been compelling from the start, fantastic from both teams.

Jason McNeill: England tearing through a middle order is one of the finest sights in sport! Wrap it up now lads.

thegoogly: Must go down as one of the best wins for England for a long time, considering their position after first innings

More oohs and aahs from the Edgbaston crowd as Yasir Shah slices one through the gully area for four, with a diving Ballance unable to get to it. England have their hands on their heads as to what could have been. Woakes then gets the ball swinging in and hitting Yasir's thigh pad, big shout for lbw, but too high. Edgbaston's chief trumpeter has moved on to the Rocky theme, and we've taken an extra 15 minutes before the tea interval.

That was a good ball. He's suddenly hit his length. That kept going and Sami Aslam misjudged it.

    Aslam b Finn 70 (125-7)

Bowled 'im! Like a pair of London buses, Finn's long long wait for a wicket brings two. And what a time for Aslam to start shouldering arms to an inswinger. Finn comes in from round the wicket, Aslam lets it go, and the ball nicks the top of off-stump, with the bails coming off almost in a "oh, all right then, if we must" sort of way. Tremendous work by Finn, and the win surely not far off.

    Sarfraz c Root b Woakes 0 (Pak 125-6)

Brilliant! Woakes superbly set Sarfraz up in this over, threw a few full deliveries that shaped away, and then got him playing with a less-than-fuller length. Ball catches the edge and Root takes a good, low catch at second slip. Pakistan have now lost three wickets for just one run in 19 balls.
