I'm at The Oval, but my wife had to work. She said she didn't mind me coming, but I think it was one of THOSE "I don't mind". Maybe a, erm, "shout out" to Katharine in Winchester on the BBC feed will help get me out of the doghouse? I know she'll be reading. Thanks!

A thumping off-drive from Bairstow brings the Yorkshire keeper four, and a loose delivery on middle and leg is effortlessly guided through square leg for four more. Will we have time for one more before lunch?

Jim McGrath: Queueing to get into Edgbaston in 2006 heard a huge cheer go up as Hoggy took a wicket with 5th ball. Both gutted and delighted!

PitchedOutsideLeg: 1976 Gillette Cup Final. Our driver Bernard stopped at EVERY service station for a 'brew'. Missed Farokh Engineer's wicket.

Wahab is bending his back here, flinging down some hostile bouncers to Bairstow who sways out of the way. His first run is a rather panicky single, which might have seen Ballance run out if the throw had hit. A leg slip is posted again for Ballance, who sees out the over.

Hales and Vince have showed us bits but they've not consolidated it, they've not convinced us.

Ballance, who's still stepping deeper into his crease as a trigger movement, is off the mark as he guides Sohail for two.

Meanwhile, Boycs on TMS is still banging on about his campaign for four-day Tests. He thinks they can get the players to bowl 105 overs in a day. So far today, they've bowled 21 in the best part of two hours - so, I humbly ask, how can anyone persuade them to bowl 105 in a day?

I bet those wickets cost Wahab a few runs if you look back. I don't think there's anything special in the bowlers.

But this is a 600 pitch. But if you play three poor shots and then someone gets a poor delivery, maybe there's a complex run-out, and then you've really messed it up.

    Wahab 5-1-19-2

As Wahab celebrates his 50th Test wicket, Jonny Bairstow strides to the crease - the tourists are firmly on top here. Bairstow, bat high up in the air and bobbing like a baseball player, defends as Wahab completes a wicket maiden.

Now, that was a good ball. It was short of a length, he played back, as it zipped at him. It kept going at the angle. But Vince has a problem with the left-armer. This one is a very good ball. I don't think you can blame the lad for that.

    Vince c Sarfraz b Wahab 1 (Eng 74-4)

Vince is up on his toes playing a back-foot defensive shot, but Wahab finds the thinnest of edges and Sarfraz takes another catch. Might Vince be playing for his Test career in the second innings?

The anti-Vince brigade will look at the scorecard and see "caught behind", but even Geoffrey Boycott reckons he got a good ball there.

    Sohail 8-1-23-1

Vince is off the mark with a single to square leg, Ballance takes guard pawing at the ground like a prize bull, but he could also do with a big score. There's a half-hearted appeal for a catch behind - the keeper appeals, the bowler only belatedly so - as Sohail completes a tight over.

In terms of Root, I'd be cross because they haven't bowled any magic balls. I've got out myself. Because this is a 600 pitch.

When you win the toss and bat, your number five will be hoping not to have to even put his pads on before lunch, but Gary Ballance is out and marking his guard in only the 18th over. Having posted a short leg, Wahab tests the left-hander with a short ball first up. Remembering Ballance's tendency to nick one down the leg side, a leg slip is added to the close fielders.

England have two new batsmen in, yet to score. And here comes Boycott, off the long run...
