England's best two players have given Pakistan a lifeline here. Root is normally so calm and comfortable, so it's so surprising when he makes these mistakes.

    Root c Sarfraz b Wahab 26 (Eng 73-3)

We were worried about Vince nicking off, but that's the end of Joe Root's contribution as he chases one he needn't have played, and it's a regulation catch for keeper Sarfraz Ahmed. England have lost their captain and first officer in the space of six deliveries, putting a completely different complexion on this first session.

Toby Robins: Only saw one wicket on last Friday, in the queue for the bar every time. Once England were in to bat I was held down by total strangers.

Jeff Foster: Was 10 mins late to Trent Bridge Ashes 2016 whilst wife chatted. Missed four wickets!

James Vince is the new man at the crease. Fair to say he's playing for his place on the winter tours, having failed to reach 50 in his first nine Test innings, and with worrying tendencies to (a) get out between 35 and 42 (which he's done four times), and more importantly (b) keep nicking to the slips while off-driving. Let's see how he goes today.

It's very unlike Cook to be playing this kind of stroke. It's a bit of a lapse in concentration. He's just trying to place it on the on side. It's a bit of fortune for Pakistan. It's very rare that you say that about Cook, but he's relaxed a bit.

    Cook b Sohail 35 (Eng 69-2)

Oh, dear. Having played so well this morning, Cook attempts to pull right-armer Sohail and gets a bottom edge onto his stumps. He won't enjoy looking at that again. Suddenly, Pakistan's tails will be up.

That's the length, it's full to get the batsman driving. It's quite a simple catch for first slip. It's low down to his left. Iftikhar has replaced Mohammad Hafeez, but looks like he's got similar hands.

  9. dropped catch

Dropped! Cook's first false stroke as he nicks Wahab to first slip, where debutant Iftikhar Ahmed gets his fingers to it but shells the chance. Ouch. Wahab doesn't look happy. Root, who began the over with a careful four guided through third man, attempts to uppercut the final delivery but doesn't make contact.

Now, here's the Alex Hales dismissal. It's caused plenty of controversy and debate - I'll leave you to have a watch and make up your own minds.

Pakistan rotate their pace triumvirate as Sohail replaces Amir at the Pavilion End. Still a few empty seats - I hope people aren't still queuing to get into The Oval - but it's a better over from Sohail, just a Root single from it.

Cook is dominating the Pakistan bowlers here - perhaps he's remembering 2010, where he was under pressure for his place but hit a hundred on this ground which secured his seat on the plane for the 2010-11 Ashes. And look what happened there...

When Riaz strays outside off stump, Cook chops him for four backward of point, while he's taking every single available, playing sensible, risk-free cricket.

The third umpire needs to take a more prominent role in this, because he's only 10 yards away from that catch.

The Hales dismissal is still provoking plenty of debate...

Dale Webb: Shocker of a decision there! I'm a bowler but still believe the batsman get the benefit when it's not clear!

Ginger Pirlo: Eh? How has technology not helped the umpires? Quite clearly hits the floor well before his hand. Farce.

  16. Eng 56-1published at 12:09 British Summer Time 11 August 2016

    Cook 29 (36 balls), Root 15 (26)

The players resume - though I suspect a few of you will be chuntering about the over-rate after Pakistan only managed to bowl 12 in the first hour. In their defence, that third umpire review for the Hales dismissal did take a lot of time out of the game.

Cook continues to rattle along well against Amir, helping himself to a two and a single.

Pakistan make their first bowling change as Sohail Khan, a little disappointing today, is replaced by left-arm quick Wahab Riaz, who looks like he hasn't dragged a comb through his hair this morning. Cook and Root add a single apiece, and the players have earned some drinks.
