Iftikhar's bowling action actually kind of looks like my bowling action. And with similar results as well. There's some casual swing of the hands as he runs up, and then a full roll of the arm. Moeen knows all about it though, as he again charges down the track and heaves it over deep mid-wicket for England's first six of the innings.

These middle-order players are always likely to give you a chance, but they can take the game away from you.

Len, I don't know what a capex justification is, but I bet you had fun writing it. Also, what language did you subconsciously end up writing it in? That's skill, man!

Moeen continues to frustrate Pakistan's bowlers, especially Wahab. A full and wide delivery is slashed at hard, and as with most balls that get slashed hard, this one runs wide of the slip cordon for four. Cue committee meeting call from Misbah at the end of the over.

Len Betts: I once wrote a capex justification after drinking a bottle of red. My boss gave it back asking me to redo it in English.

Well, it's your debut, and as a batsman you're desperate to impress but your team has been asked to field. What do you do? Bowl a few off-spinners of course. Iftikhar is thrown the ball and then rolls his arm over for some polite 'hit me' deliveries. Moeen says 'thank you' with his mouth full as he smacks one over mid-wicket for four, scaring away a bunch of pigeons in the process.

I think this has been the quietest afternoon session I have ever live-texted on this page - from a crowd perspective that is. It's okay, a couple of cakes and 'energy drinks' should hopefully change that soon. Wahab is unfazed by his failed bouncer from a short while ago, and bumps another one to Moeen. It's still too high to worry anyone apart from people on stilts.

This is a very healthy partnership, at a good pace. This is where Pakistan have missed Yasir Shah's form - he's been given a great start by the pacers and the chance to get into the tail.

Amazing picture Vincent, where are you flying to? Bali was popular with our readers in the last Test. Hopefully you were inspired.

Moeen revisits his attacking technique from earlier on and walks down the track to Yasir and club one to long off for four. A very sensible and calculated shot - bearing in mind his ghastly dismissal off a similar shot from the Lord's Test.

England's top five average 34.78 in Test cricket this year. Numbers six and seven average 75.68.

    Bairstow 51, Moeen 29

Bairstow tries to work Wahab's final ball away on the leg side but can't get bat on it. And I think it's a sign of a man in really good nick, as Bairstow punches at his bat in slight anger. Nice to see the missed opportunities being acknowledged. These two batsmen have batted nearly 80 minutes now by the way.

Jonny Bairstow has scored 906 runs this year at an average of 82.36. Of wicketkeepers, only AB de Villiers (933) and Andy Flower (1,045) have scored more in a calendar year.

He was caught off a no-ball earlier, but Bairstow's continuing that really good run of form. England have really needed him today.

    Eng 170-5

Not for the first time this series, Jonny Bairstow gets to a 50. Him and Moeen scamper through for a single, and that's the landmark. Bairstow raises his bat in a sort of royal wave kind of way - little jigs. But the crowd very appreciative of the effort.

I've never tried picking a team after three port and lemons, but I can imagine it's a lot of fun. Like judging the x-factor after a few jagerbombs.

Wahab tries a few short ones to Moeen but the left-hander's defence is as effective as his drives. Same sort of high to low movement, and I have no doubt him getting on his tip toes early helps him get on top of the ball well.

My mum and my auntie could pick an England side for The Oval after you've just won at Edgbaston, even after three port and lemons. But your job as a selector is to go round the counties and study players. Look at some youngsters who've got something a bit special and can get better. Many of the top players have come in at a young age, like Root and Cook.

Clipping your finger nails on the cricket pitch is the same as clipping your finger nails on the train. Shouldn't be allowed.

This is about the time in a batsman's innings that the mockers monsters start rearing their heads isn't it? Bairstow on 44, Moeen on 27, surely prime jinx territory? Sohail Khan tries to prove that by aiming a bouncer towards Bairstow but it's so high and wide, even Sarfraz's dive that would match a David de Gea effort can't prevent four byes.

Andy from Ammanford: I was in Italy back in 2005 on day four of the Edgbaston Ashes Test, unable to find an Internet connection. I only found out that England won by two runs three days later.

JP, Birmingham: I missed the Sunday of 1981 Ashes Test, Edgbaston. Friend called round, I was ill in bed. Self inflicted after Saturday night on the lash. Regretted ever since. Gutted.

Nigel: At Lord's in 2006 I was fumbling in my bag for my last sarnie and missed KP's first Test wicket - Kamran Akmal. Not only that it was a day when we only took three wickets.
