That's drinks, which the Pakistan fielders take gratefully.

Not to jinx him, but Hales is closing in on Robin Smith's 167 not out, which is the highest ODI score by an England batsman. That was against Australia at Edgbaston in 1993. England actually lost that game.

The highest ODI score by any batsman is 264 by Rohit Sharma for India against Sri Lanka in November 2014. Unsurprisingly, India won that game, by no less than 153 runs.

He has exploited the conditions brilliantly. He has had some good fiortune. The edge has come in but so has the middle of the bat. He is reading the bowling superbly. It is also a beautiful surface. There is a potential for real mayhem.

Oh, Wahab. The Pakistan bowler looks miserable as Hales hoicks some leg side rubbish away, before flogging a long-hop for four. Wahab sighs, turns and has a brief consultation with Azhar. Hales just resets himself, toe-ends a delivery past the keeper and that's his 150. Hales salutes the crowd as Pakistan look wearily on. This pair have also brought up their 200 partnership, from 166 balls.

Pakistan have got to the stage of 'What do we do now?' Some big scores have been chased here. It will be interesting to see who might come out next for England?

Nawaz returns and serves up a beauty to Hales first ball. It sneaks over Hales' attempted punch and ends up just a whisker above middle stump. Root moseys down the pitch for a quick word with Hales, but Hales chooses not to listen. He steps away, smashes a short ball through the off-side and it drops just short of a diving Yasir. Then bang: Hales drives another boundary to cap off another expensive over.

Adam Holder: Wish Hales played this way in Test matches. Looks so much better.

Ben Sutton: England absolutely rollicking along! Send Buttler in next for some fireworks, really sicken em!

    Sub Baidya: England declaration?

Pakistan are looking a little grouchy out there. Wahab is huffing and puffing, and Root whips out a glorious late cut that flies down to the third man. Too short, Wahab. Hales then gets turned inside out by a straight delivery that he manages to get a thick edge on. It falls short of any fielders and they scamper a single.

If you turn it into a 20-over match now, sides tend to get 200 off 20 overs. If you are just one down, it is not unrealistic to think 400 is on the cards.

Olly Howick: Played against Alastair Cook at school, team-mate dropped a dolly with the future England captain on seven... he ended 140 not out.

James Thorndyke: Under-15s Devon Cup semi final. Babbacombe CC vs Paignton CC. Dropped Chris Read on seven... goes on to make 100. Lost. Still gutted.

Root attempts a paddle shot, but Amir sees him coming and adjusts to go wide outside off-stump. Root ends up looking a bit daft as he lets the ball roll by, bat pulled in to his chest. Amir keeps steaming in, nearly getting Root to chop on before he pulls a short ball and scampers off strike.

That was more stopping four than a dropped catch. Hales has had a couple of let-offs now. A bit of luck on his home ground.

It is Hales' day, and then some. First he opens his shoulders at a wide Yasir delivery and just about launches it to the boundary. The next ball is smashed into the covers and dropped by Azhar, who saves four runs. Finally, for good measure, Hales launches the last ball for six. Down on one knee, slog-sweep, thank you very much.

It is important that Pakistan go to their change-ups and try to take some pace off the ball. They have good skills these Pakistan bowlers.

Amir is back to see if he can break this partnership, suncream shining on his cheeks. Hales has a wild swing at another slower ball, misses and chunters away to himself. The next ball is quicker, fuller and dabbed away for two.

And that's Joe Root's fifth consecutive half-century as he works Amir through third-man. The crowd show their appreciation in traditional fashion.

Phil Broeders: Colleague's first game. Jumped over a slow trundling ball in fear and they still ran four as he needed two throws to get it back!

George Simonds: Fielding deep square leg, county U15 trial, skimming catch palmed for six, next ball ditto but parry caught in crowd by my Dad.

Rob Helliwell: Wicketkeeper raised his hands to celebrate a clean bowled - didn't see the ball was still coming towards him. Teeth everywhere.

  17. Eng 177-1published at 27 overs

Hales shapes for a slog sweep as Yasir continues. Yasir goes full and straight, Hales readjusts and defends it away. He makes up for that with the final ball, as Yasir drops short and Hales gives himself room and slices it through the off-side. That was a good looking shot.

Thank you, Phil. Hales settles back over his bat as he and Root toy around with Hasan's medium-pacers. Hales makes a meal of a slower ball, missing a pull and getting struck on the forearm instead. He's fine, though, as the pair see out a calm over.

When he needed to deliver he has: for himself and for his side, most importantly. He's had a pretty bleak summer and he definitely needed those runs. He loves this pitch.
