It has to be said, the man at deep mid-wicket made a real hash of that. Pushing it over for six. Great 50 for Buttler - clean hitting personified.

Take a bow, Buttler. He's made the fastest half-century by an England player in ODIs. And he's brought it up with another gloriously brilliant six, heaved high over the rope. That's 53 from 22 deliveries. Ridiculous.

  3. 6 runs

    Eng 335-3published at 41.5 overs

Buttler is now not checking to see where these ridiculous shots are ending up. Malik's first delivery is launched over long-on for six and lands in some unfortunate punter's pint. Umpire Kettlebrough sniffs it and promptly pulls a face. Buttler then launches another huge six, straight down the ground, then steps back to a short ball and flogs it away for another six. Utterly remarkable.

  4. Eng 321-3published at 41 overs

Butt-scoop! Lovely, lovely work as Buttler takes a yorker, turns it into a low full toss with a turn of his bat and scoops it down to fine leg for four. Hasan oversteps and Buttler, like a boxer, jabs the free hit down to the boundary. He has the most extraordinary range of shots. There's some gentle nurdling of singles before Buttler ferociously smacks the ball down to mid-wicket. Just a single this time, though.

That Jos Buttler shot was like a golfer nailing a drive 350 yards down the fairway and turning round and picking up your tee without even looking at the ball.

Buttler launches Nawaz for a flat six. That was stunningly good, clean and with a good old fashioned thwack off the bat. And again! That is massive! Ridiculous striking from Buttler, who danced down the track and just thumped it as far and high as he could. Morgan joins in too as he smashes a flatter delivery into the stands. That's rather ruined Nawaz's figures, as he finishes with 1-62 from his ten. Buckle up, this could be carnage.

Mark Adamoulos: Hales needed that. Hardly in top form during the test series, but history maker today. Take a bow.

Phil Knight: I remember watching Robin Smith getting 167 and now just watched Alex Hales beat it. Great hitting.

Naveed Afzal: I predicted during the T20 World Cup that England will dominate in all formats very soon. Just look how destructive this side is.

Huge lbw appeal from Hasan is turned down as Buttler shuffles across his stumps and his swing misses. This is better from Pakistan, and Morgan nearly gifts them a wicket with a dangerous run to get off the mark. Had that throw hit, he would have been out. It's all go as another lbw shout against Buttler is turned down. That was a quicker delivery and Buttler misjudged it, but he makse up for it as he whips a full toss for four. And breathe...

    Root c Sarfraz b Nawaz 85 (283-3)

Superb bowling from Nawaz to dismiss Joe Root. Pakistan took a breath after Hales' dismissal and they've got Root to edge behind with a skiddy delivery. Root is fuming - he's going to miss out on a century, and Pakistan have two new batsman at the crease. Buttler at one end, Morgan at the other - can Pakistan get these two out cheaply?

You can be forgiven for reviewed a stone-cold lbw after you've just broken the English record for an individual ODI score.

He has absolutely launched in to that one,. It was not the best of deliveries but he still obliges. What a moment for Alex Hales.

    Hales lbw b Hasan 171 (Eng 281-2)

Hales is given out lbw! One ball after passing the record, he misses a straight one. He reviews it - who's going to say no to a man whose just broken a 23-year-old record? - but that, I'm afraid, is plumb. The crowd stand as one to applaud a brilliant innings from Hales.

Hasan oversteps, handing Hales a free hit. Is this the moment? No, Hales just drops it into the covers and takes the single. It's all happening as the two scamper a quick single, Root narrowly avoids a run out, and then Hales makes English ODI history.

He stands, swings his arms, launches Hasan away for four and that's it! Take a bow Alex Hales. 171 not out but...

Ooh, Hales on 165 and he misses a straight ball from Hasan. Pakistan goes up, umpire says no and Azhar decides it's worth a look...

It's hit Hales on the back foot but he looks to be outside off. The third ump does a bit of rock and rolling and it's pitching outside leg. Not out, and so Hales will continue.

Rachel T: England ODI cricket has gone from meek to marmalisation in just a few years. Love it!

Matt Skilleter: If England don't make their biggest one day score today then it would be a failure. Could Hales also make the record books?

Len: We could actually win the World Cup at home in 2019, a revelation considering the omnishambles that was 2015.

I wonder if Hales knows about Smith's record. He doesn't look in the slightest bit bothered as he sweeps Malik down to the boundary. That's followed up with a cut to the off-side that brings him a single. Root, lest we forget him, is going along nicely at almost a run-a-ball. There's a messy bit of fielding from that allows him to pinch an extra single.

The labouring Wahab is back, and Root hoicks a short ball up and over mid-wicket. Hales then drives gloriously through extra cover for four. Sit back and enjoy that one, Alex. The next one is short again and Hales pulls it away. He's on 160 and Robin Smith's record is edging ever closer...

Perry: The transformation in England ODI is unreal! For years we never had any game plan now we just do what the hell we want!

Dan Makeham: After his difficult summer, you'd have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy this ODI knock from Halesy.

Phil Worden: England's batting strength - a few years ago wanting Morgan to move up the order, now he should move down for Buttler or Stokes.

Root decides Hales isn't going to have all the plaudits. He unfurls a lovely reverse-sweep to Malik that goes for four. He tries to sweep the next ball, is hit well outside the line and ignores Malik's hopeful appeal as he jogs a leg bye. Hales and Root then meet in the middle for a fist bump as Pakistan trudge back to their positions.
