Yasir returns but he can't prevent Hales reaching three figures with a pushed single to leg. He has his doubters but they will all be very quiet this afternoon. Take a bow son.

That's all from me for now. With England eyeing a monster score, I'll leave you in the capable hands of Amy Lofthouse.

Jamie Waugh: Playing against the great Collis King, we dropped him on 3 and 33 and he walked off 205 not out... well played sir.

Simon Beasor: Charity game. Wl batsman. Mate hurled it in fiercely for run out. I instinctively ducked out of the way. Never spoke to me again.

Hales is catching the eye but Root is moving rapidly towards yet another efficient ODI 50. After the madness of the Azhar over, Hasan puts the brakes on a bit.

That turned out to be a bizarre choice from Azhar to bring himself on. He's almost undone the good work of Nawaz, who bowled exceptionally well. A bit of bold batting and poor bowling has given England 20 off the over. A lot of those shots were filthy hoicks across the line.

Jerry Rudd: Ball went straight up in air, three fielders converge. Captain shouts leave it to Bob. Ball hits ground - Bob not playing that day.

Greg Double: Calling "MINE!" from point, but then wind makes it a dolly for the keeper...so I cancelled my run. Keeper didn't move. "Sorry".

David Patterson: Fielding at long-on. Run to a flier shouting "come to daddy", misjudge, flies over head for six, spectator says "come to fatty".

Azhar Ali has given himself a twirl. He probably wishes he hadn't as Hales clubs his short first ball down the ground for four and then goes one better with a straight smash.

For good measure he hammers through extra cover and then slaps on the floor to cow for two more fours.

W Arshad: It's definitely Alex Hales' day, you have to ride your luck when you're given it and cash in.

Josh Withers: Alex Hales, buy a lottery ticket tonight. Buy one for me as well. Ludicrous fortune.

Alistair Pike: Surely no excuse for front foot no ball? What does that extra two inches really gain you?

  9. Eng 137-1published at 22 overs

That England haven't lost another wicket is something of a minor miracle. These two have over-stepped confident and planted a firm foot in the territory marked cocky. Root plays an ill-advised reverse sweep to a good Nawaz ball and is fortunate it doesn't carry to a fielder.

I was taking pains to set a field to a batsman taking most of his runs on the leg side. On-field drinking was causing some disruption to the fielders' attention. I was delighted to have set the trap which resulted in the batter wafting at a ball that went straight to the fielder placed for the purpose. Unfortunately, he was texting his girlfriend. I glowered in a Jimmyesque manner but to no avail as he was still adding some kisses to his message.

Hales has mixed the fortunate with the fantastic today. He is 74 not out now, with Root 36.

At no point did Alex Hales look perturbed about the fact he'd hit it to the fielder. Everyone was celebrating the wicket and he was sort of saying to the umpire "get your arm out!" It's definitely his day - put your mortgage on him getting a double hundred.

  13. Eng 130-1published at 20.4 overs

Modern technology to the rescue! Alex Hales slaps the ball straight down deep mid-wicket's throat but doesn't have to budge an inch as the third umpire calls his on-field colleague to signal a no ball.

Joe Root thick edges the free hit down to the vacant spot at third man for four.

    England's day today.

Steve Smith (not THAT one): As the ball looped to cover point, the bowler shouted "Stan!", who turned and shouted "What?", as the dropped on his head.

Anjam Fiaz: Was adjusting the borrowed trousers when the ball was hit to me. Didn't know whether to stop the ball or my pants falling down.

Alan Mercer: Caught at deep mid wicket - fielder avoids boundary marker by running on the outside - still celebrating.

Poor Mohammad Nawaz. He is fielding at the stumps at the non-striker's end and takes a ball right to the shin from a powerful throw. To rub salt into the wound, Hales goes on a boundary spree with a back-foot punch through midwicket for four and a big aerial blow down the ground for six.

It was one of those true ones that shows it's Alex Hales' day. Three fielders converge and it goes smack in the middle of all three. It's a horrific shot: Hales tried to knock it into the car park and it's dropped between three fielders.

More fielding shenanigans from Pakistan as a Wahab ball keeps a bit low, beats him and also the keeper before scurrying off to the boundary for four byes.

Shoaib Malik has a mixed couple of balls, flicking the ball back superbly to prevent a boundary before misjudging a potential catch and being short to a skied slice by Hales.

Alex Hales must rue, and if he doesn't then he's stupid, those three glaring hundreds he threw away in Test cricket at the start of the summer. He's the type of bloke to say "oh I'll get them at some time," but he really does need to be hard on himself.

hic1221: Day before County trials, practicing catching off a skateboard ramp in the garden. Broke my nose twice in one day.

Gareth John Bale: Played with a guy who only ever threw underarm. Once, he held on for too long and threw it over his head for four.

Nawaz continues to make England work for every run, one of which - from a Hales push in to the off side - brings up the 100. Eoin Morgan's men are almost perfectly placed for a biggie here.
