Robbie Williams' Candy blasts out from the Headingley sound thingamajig. And it's sweet news for Pakistan fans as Mohammad Irfan is back to bowl. But the news turns sour in installments. First as Irfan bowls the widest wide in the history of wides. Cue the comparisons to Harmison. Next up, Irfan halts his run-up near the crease and looks in discomfort again. Predictably, he walks off yet again.

You can't fault Hasan Ali - he keeps running in, trying to create a wicket or an opportunity for his team. He has retained the fire in his belly.

  3. Eng 205-5published at 41 overs

Ben Stokes has got plenty to say up on the England balcony with Alex Hales probably wishing he'd chosen a different seat. Stokes has a hoodie on him and wouldn't look out of place in a Rocky trailer at the moment. Moeen then causes another scare for everyone by swinging his bat forward to Hasan's good length and it loops high over mid-off to land just past a backtracking Azhar Ali.

The pace of this innings is sluggish by England's standards, but they're just adapting to the match situation.

England have gone into Test mode by the looks of it. Even the crowd are bored of cheering singles, the latest of which takes the score up to 200. Moeen breaks the monotony by walking down the track to heave-ho but can only slice it over the circle. No danger, just another single.

Jonny Bairstow has delivered in a situation which was precarious when he came in, and now he can entertain his supporters with some big shots.

In fact, it's so relaxed, the Mexican wave has begun at Headingley with plenty of the England substitutes getting involved. I wonder if the cameraman gets vertigo trying to follow the wave around. One bloke in the stands is taking the opportunity to read a newspaper. The good people on TMS are testing their memory banks on some ODI match of a bygone era. England take a leisurely two off Hasan's eighth over. Umpire Marais Erasmus shows Azhar Ali his watch. Probably getting near last orders somewhere.

There's a real sense of control with England at the moment - they have this ultimate sense of belief, which I suppose comes with winning games.

Well, not much to report from that over apart from Bairstow's landmark. A representation of how England are now treating this run chase. Like a casual jog down the park. No need to sprint from the gate to the jungle gym when you can take the scenic route and have a dip in the canal as well. Maybe grab an ice-cream on the way as you shout for the dog to stop scaring the kids.

That shot was beautifully played, a sign of authority. Jonny's just continuing the great summer he's had.

Done it! Bairstow walks down the track to drive Nawaz to long on for four. Gone in a flash that one, nearly took out non-striker Moeen who had to stop drop and roll. Bairstow brings up his fifty as well, raises his bat after apologising to Moeen as the crowd chant "Yorkshire, Yorkshire".

Hmm... dare I say it, this game's gone a bit slow since that Stokes wicket. Bairstow tries to change that by striding forward and attempting a mow over the circle. But he misses and keeper Sarfraz whips the bails off. Bairstow kept his back foot in the crease. No harm done.

Bairstow has a knack of coming into the one-day side and winning the game for England. I remember he did it last year against New Zealand.

By the way, did I see the Pakistan fan with the incredibly tall hat leave the stadium earlier? Has he gone home or did he just pop out for a breather? Moeen's the new man for England. He charges down to Nawaz, but checks himself and politely nudges it to the leg side for a single.

Irfan update number 791: He's back on the field.

I don't think Pakistan expected this pitch to turn as much as it has, and Azhar Ali will regret not picking Yasir Shah.

So England appear to be in cruise control. Thanks to this destructive, yet calculating pair, which put on 103 together before Stokes got out. You never say never if you are Pakistan fan, but it looks like England are on course for a 4-0 lead in the series.

It was there for Stokes to hit, but he mis-timed it directly to the man at deep mid-wicket. He'll be livid with himself for not finishing the job.

WICKETpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

    Stokes c Babar b Imad 69 (Eng 175-5)

Breakthrough for Pakistan. Not as effective as tea and biscuit to soothe a ranting coach but it will do for now. Ben Stokes tries to go on the attack off the mediocre bowling of Imad and for half a second the one-knee heave over mid-wicket looked good. Babar at the rope takes a simple catch though and Stokes falls one short of his ODI best.

  19. Eng 175-4published at 34 overs

    Stokes 69, Bairstow 37

Must say Mickey Arthur's been seething over the last 10 minutes. His deputies, one of them being Grant Flower, look like the senators from ancient Rome who just don't want to get on the wrong side when the leader is having a massive rant. Somebody get Mickey a cup of tea and a biscuit, pronto! Meanwhile, Umar Gul changes the angle for Stokes, who digs out a yorker length delivery no problem. England have an answer for everything at this point.
