Ben Stokes plays the straight drive as well as anybody in the world - the burly Durham all-rounder drilling back-to-back fours off Hasan Ali.

Jon Dunn: Look up 'catching practice' in the dictionary and it'll just be a picture of that shot. Awful.

Tony Harrison: I'm going to get all Geoffrey now: bat sensibly. My mother could knock these runs off with a stick of rhubarb!

He is susceptible to it isn't he? He was looking to guide it towards third man but it goes straight into the hands of the fielder. It was almost a brain fade from Eoin Morgan.

Oh, skip! What have you done?

Just when England had taken a little bit of sting out of Pakistan's enthusiasm, Eoin Morgan guides the ball straight into the hands of the only slip in position.

Not for the first time this summer, England need a big knock from Jonny Bairstow.

Pakistan are buzzing about in the field - swarming all over the batsman when he pats one back to the bowler. Ben Stokes is off the mark with a wristy flick for two. The bowler responds by going round the wicket and he's cut for four.

We also need to take into account the quality of the worldwide bowling attack over the course of the batsman's career. Joe Root hasn't had to deal with McGrath, Warne, Waqar etc. Good as Root is I agree with those who say we need to see lots more before we can firmly place him in the pantheon of all time greats.

Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim is round the wicket to the left-handers, skidding the ball onto the bat as the late-evening dew begins to fall. England need to ride this one out.

It is a bit of a party time. This game could have been a damp squib because of the state of the series. Fair play to Pakistan who have come out fighting with the ball.

Ben Stokes joins his fellow leftie Eoin Morgan at the crease. Pakistan are bang up for this now - they scent a chance of victory.

England still have these two, Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali to come before we're into the bowlers. Who can all hold a bat incidentally.

What a strange sight - Joe Root walking off nodding his head. He just got the top edge with the pull shot. Irfan didn't look comfortable under that catch but he took it nonetheless.

Joe Root tries to pull Hasan Ali but gets a top edge and a steepling catch is expertly pouched by Mohammad Irfan at deep fine leg.

Mockers? Nah. Did he need to play that shot? Nah. Is he still the best? Yep.

VB: At this point even I think Roy needs to get back to his county. Sure it's a great catch, but it keeps being him.

Jon Dunn: Hales & Roy are all or nothing. It's spectacular when it comes off, but when it doesn't...
