I'm going to blow the internet up with my next statement.

But considering how good Joe Root is across all three formats, and how he can score against any attack in any conditions, and considering he can score runs 360 round the wicket - is he better than Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar ever were?

I'm being serious. I'm a Lara man - but he never had the range of shots and consistency as Root has.

Joe Root is a real lesson for any young cricketer.

  3. Eng 19-1published at 3 overs

    Root 4, Hales 0

All that does is bring Joe Root to the wicket. A similar delivery and Root arches back in his crease and caresses it through point for four.

    Genius. He was born 'in'.

There's an extra bit of bounce across Jason Roy, who was thinking the ball might come back into him. He opened himself up and the right shoulder came in too soon. But what a catch!

    Roy c Rizwan b Irfan 14 (Eng 15-1)

    Four, four, out!

Mohammad Irfan has the final laugh when he angles one across Jason Roy, finds the edge, and a tumbling Mohammad Rizwan does the rest low down to his left at second slip.

  6. Eng 15-0published at 2.4 overs

Umpire Marais Erasmus has warned Mohammad Irfan for running on to the pitch. If he continues doing that, he'll be taken out of the attack.

But who's going to break the bad news to the biggest man I've ever seen in my life.

Jason Roy isn't intimidated - pulling a half-tracker for four then smearing the next delivery through extra cover.

  8. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

    Roy 6, Hales 0

Will somebody buy Alex Hales a new helmet? He's been sporting a patched-up corner on the peak of his current lid for a good year now. It looks like it's been repaired with tape he found in the shed.

The right-hander watches Umar Gul through to the keeper, then winces when the veteran Pakistan quick nips one back into his groin area. Maiden.

Mark: There hasn't been a team this bad at ODI cricket, and so good at Test cricket since... England actually.

The Two Doctors: Fed up of these "Pakistan are poor" tweets. Can only play what's in front of you and England are annihilating them.

    Target 248

When the players walked to the middle for the start of the innings, I noticed Trevor Bayliss in the distance, positioned above the sightscreen and recognisable only because of his trademark floppy white hat. It could be quite unnerving for a batsman. Play a bad shot and realise he's not there - is he on the phone to that kid at Lancashire who's piling on the runs every week?

Seven off the opening over - the highlight being Jason Roy's back foot punch through the off side. Four runs the moment it left the bat.

Jason Roy is a big lad, muscles bulging through his dark blue lycra. He marches to the wicket looking like he means business.

Speaking of big lads, 7ft 1ins of prime Pakistan fast bowling talent has the ball in his hand: Mohammad Irfan.

    Play.

  14. How's stat?!published at 18:08 British Summer Time 1 September 2016

Alex Hales comes into this match having posted England’s highest ODI score (171) and has now averaged 71.2 from his 11 ODI innings in 2016, the highest of any man to complete more than eight innings in this calendar year.

Thanks Bibhash. Shall we run a sweepstake?

Will England do this in 12 overs? 25 overs? 40 overs?

Perhaps we're being cocky and Pakistan will finally fight back.

Myles, I have never seen a more guilty-looking cat in my life. Or animal for that matter. If you've got one that trumps this feel free to send over.

Back to the match (if we must), will England do this at a canter? Or a trot? Or whatever it is that hamsters do?

Or will they be left on all fours like some of our readers' four-legged friends? I reckon Joe Root's got an innings hidden in him for today. We shall wait and see. It's time for me to relieve Marc Higginson of his homemade cake (just for safekeeping, honest!). He's here to take you through the start of the run chase.

Mark Gray: Good to see that Pakistan have a foolproof plan to stop us scoring a big score again. Bat first and be all out for 250. Cunning!

matt benton: Currently taking bets to see if Alex Hales can individually beat the entire Pakistan total.

This is the first time that spinners have taken five wickets in an ODI at Headingley - and only the fourth time for any side.

The bump ball refers to Jonny Bairstow's appeal (17:10 entry) for a caught-behind off Hasan, as replays showed the batsman's swing to a full toss came off the surface.

As you can see, even cats need a bag to breathe into when they're seething...
