Hasan Ali is cheered into the bowling attack. It takes two deliveries before he drops short and is punched through mid-wicket for four.

And again... this time Root cocking his wrists and guiding it a little finer and through mid-on.

The ultimate test of any English player's ability is what level of commentator's curse he can withstand. Root, let's see what you've got.

Eoin Morgan is being worked over here by Mohammad Irfan. A fast, aggressive spell and the England skipper can't get bat on ball. If he did, he'd probably edge behind anyway. So perhaps as well.

Not out! The ball flicked the player's shirt.

I feel sorry for Pakistan here. One ball earlier, an appeal for caught behind when Morgan missed a hook shot was turned down and called a wide for height.

However, I think Morgan was hit on the glove. Pakistan didn't review so we might never know.

Pakistan think they've had Eoin Morgan caught behind off Mohammad Irfan. The umpire says no, but the tourists review it.

This is completely different batting to the first innings at Trent Bridge. There's a lot of noise in the crowd. Pakistan have their tails up. It's a different game altogether.

    Root 19 off 16 balls

You want evidence of Root's genius? How about the fact he's just taken an Umar Gul delivery from a decent length and nonchalantly pulled it for six over deep square leg.

For those who offer up Virat Kohli... he's not done it in England yet. Rahane, yes. Kohli, no.

Virat averages 13 in five Tests in England.

Dave Foot: Yeah but can Root do it on a wet Tuesday night in Port-of-Spain?

Russell Anderson: In five years or so we might be able to compare Root with Lara and Sachin, but not quite yet.

Vinay Rughani: If you're putting Root and Williamson up on a pedestal, then Virat Kohli deserves to be on the throne.

Eoin Morgan joins Joe Root at the crease. Wicket-maiden for Mr Irfan, who is serenaded when he heads back to his fielding position. The big man takes a bow.

That's a good cherry. This one is a bit straighter to the one that got Roy. It's like a leg-cutter. Simple catch for Sarfraz.

Left-arm pace from round the wicket, a little movement away, bait taken, catch pouched, celebrations commenced.

Joe Root wakes up on 20 not out.

Honestly, he's just strolled out there and is instantly hitting boundaries - the latest one a straight drive back past the bowler Umar Gul.

His timing is that good, he doesn't need an alarm clock. He just wakes up at 8am on the dot. His internal snooze is set at seven minutes.

The only caveat with my statement about Joe Root being better than Brian Lara or Sachin Tendulkar ever were is that I think Kane Williamson is just as good. If not better.

The two most complete players I've ever seen.

Mohammad Irfan, by the way, is still straying dangerously close to the middle of the pitch. He's on a tightrope now as the umpire keeps a close eye on him.

At the end of the over, Erasmus gives Irfan his second warning. One more strike and he's out.
