Hook, line and sinker Hales. The bowler was saying 'come on hit me across the line'. Hales knows he's been caught on the rod there. He's shaking his head, absolutely devastated.

    Hales b Imad 37 (Eng 67-2)

Imad? No, he mad. Alex Hales misjudges one from the spinner, tries to smack him to leg and is cleaned up by a full ball. he smashes his bat into the ground in frustration.

There's a new hotel being built next to the pavilion at Old Trafford. There are five figures on the top floor, all wearing luminous vests. Surely they're not building at this time. Cheekie freebie?

  4. Eng 63-1published at 8 overs

Joe Root is the new man and is quickly into his usual efficient run-making off Hasan. He is lucky not to be bowled last ball as he tries to scoop one that just nips past off stump.

It is a shame Roy was out when he was. You need only see the below video to see the kind of hitting of which he is capable...

  5. Eng 57-1published at 7 overs

Another top over from Imad. Just the six off his two so far.

There is a Pakistan fan in the crowd wearing a melon helmet, like some sort of fruit Magneto.

Roy is not happy about this. He thinks it's going down leg. I thought that as well. The left-armer doesn't turn the ball that much.

  7. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 6.4 overs

Roy lbw Imad 21 (Eng 56-1)

Roy gone! He attempts to reverse sweep the returning Imad and is hit low down on his pad. Up goes the finger. Roy isn't happy but the DRS system has it as umpire's call.

Roy is trying to over-hit it, that's why his timing is not there. Hales is timing the ball really well.

The last seven T20s when Pakistan bowl first, they have won two, tied one and lost four. The last game between these two teams was a tie - in the UAE.

  10. Eng 53-0published at 6 overs

Edge! No wicket, though, as Roy's attempting club over mid-on flies past Sarfraz for four. The opening powerplay is over. Not England's best, but far from their worst.

Hales has come to Old Trafford thinking it's a good batting wicket, he can trust the bounce and he can play the pull shot.

  12. Eng 48-0published at 5.3 overs

Hales is moving up through the gears. He goes pull, cut to score successive boundaries off Tanvir.

  14. Eng 39-0published at 5 overs

Stand and deliver. Mohammad Amir is smeared down the ground by Roy for four. Hales follows suit with a pull past the charging Sharjeel at backward point. England have taken a bit of time to acclimatise but they are warming to the task now.

If England get a few 12-run overs now they can get where they need to.

Take that Tanvir. Jason Roy sees one early and dances down before dispatching the ball into the stands at cow corner. Both he and Hales try to keep muscling the ball about but can't replicate the clean hit of that first ball.

Pakistan will be very happy with this start.

I just feel Roy is moving around a bit too much. Sometimes you've got to let the ball come to you.

Jacob Culshaw: Loud atmosphere to bat for Roy and Hales. Very hard to keep your concentration with the surrounding noise!

Rob Zabrocky: Call me grumpy but those horns are awful, almost as bad as the vuvuzela.

James: Watching this T20 feels like being in a traffic jam.. Stop the horn!

The first over gave away two. That is the most economical first over by Pakistan against England in a T20 international.

  20. Eng 18-0published at 3 overs

That's more like it. Mohammad Amir's first ball is dispatched to the rope by Hales, rocking back to punch through midwicket. The only big hit of the over, though.

There is a marked contrast between the fans on the balcony - who all look like Patrick Bateman - and the stands - where it is a debauched mix of beer-drinking, dancing and horn-blowing. I know where I'd rather be.
