That was definitely a shot out of frustration. It would have been a great catch by Hayley Matthews, the ball was very low.

I don't think that was necessarily the wrong thing for Lauren Winfield to do, she just needed to hit that straighter. They have just got to sit in here, the West Indies bowlers are going to bowl bad balls.

Beaumont adds a single, while neither she - nor the orange-clad umpire - seem happy with Giddings' follow-through which continues to veer close to the protected area. But the left-armer misses out on a debut ODI wicket as Winfield aims a powerful on-drive and is put down by teenager Hayley Matthews at mid-on.

She'd been eyeing it up for a few overs and that ball was just short enough - that was a lovely shot from Lauren.

  4. Eng 26-0published at 9 overs

No bowling changes from the Windies yet, it's still Shamilia Connell for her fifth over. Both England batters take time to prod at the baked pitch between deliveries. Connell bangs in one short and wide outside off stump which earns England a wide, but then strays with a couple of long-hops which Winfield despatches for four on both occasions, finally connecting with a pull shot she's been attempting several times during this innings.

The girls need to reassess getting those singles where they can, rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard going. They are hitting it lovely but just can't get it away at the moment.

  6. Eng 17-0 (Winfield 8, Beaumont 6)published at 8 overs

Left-armer Giddings moves to bowl over the wicket for the first time today - and the umpire is going to have a look as she definitely looked as though she was running on the wicket in her follow-through with the first couple of deliveries. Winfield pushes a streaky single to extra cover - had the throw hit, she would have been well short.

Scoring hasn't been easy today - but England are gritting it out for now.

On this sort of wicket it looks difficult to score, it's a case of sitting in for a while. They'll be looking to get in and then go on. If you are going to go then go to your strengths and keep good shapes.

  8. Eng 16-0published at 7 overs

Kent's Beaumont rotates the strike well with a scampered single, but the field is in tight again. Winfield adds a single, then there's a hint of a chance as Beaumont skews the ball back to the bowler - was that a caught-and-bowled chance? No replays for us to judge. But the body language of the players indicate it might have been.

"West Indies have done their homework here," notes Lydia Greenway on TMS. Commentator Henry Moeran points out they've had plenty of opportunity - they've not played since April...

  9. Eng 14-0published at 6 overs

West Indies are on their toes in the field, but Winfield gets them running with a well-struck straight drive for two, while the slow outfield holds the ball up as Winfield steers the ball through extra cover and it's two more.

It's the sort of outfield which you think is going to go for four but it doesn't - it slows up a bit. England have got to earn the right to get on top of this West Indies team - they've got to be patient.

  11. Eng 10-0published at 5 overs

Beaumont adds a single, while Winfield finally breaks her duck with a fierce pull through mid-wicket and they run one - Beaumont wanted a second run but is sent back when she was a third of the way down the track.

Lovely view from the media centre in Trelawny. That is the sea on the background - we're that close.

Ambidextrous or not, debutant Giddings has a curious field with a gully as the only close fielder - but no slips. Winfield, who holds her bat high like her fellow Yorkie Jonny Bairstow, sees out a maiden over as Giddings keeps it tight.

It's not just the Bangladesh men's team who can collapse suddenly from a winning position, as South Africa's women lose their last five wickets for no run to go down to a five-wicket defeat against New Zealand, who earn two valuable points in the ICC Women's Championship.

  15. Eng 8-0published at 3 overs

Tammy Beaumont fires England's first boundary as she guides Connell through the covers for four.

At least, we assume it goes for four uninterrupted - as the West Indies Cricket Board feed we're watching, is a static camera at one end which only shows the middle of the square. The scoreboard is also slow to update... all the more reason to stick with TMS (and this live text) as the only way to follow the game...

I'm quite intrigued to see how West Indies use Deandra Dottin. In the ODI format, she is going to have a long time to bat and often she can be used similarly to Danielle Wyatt, coming in towards the end of the innings as a pinch-hitter. She can cause quite a lot of damage.

  17. Eng 4-0published at 2 overs

The second over goes to ODI debutant Erva Giddings, who's bowling left-arm seam around the wicket with a rather curious action, almost looking as if she's bowling off the wrong foot.

Tammy Beaumont's first ball is flicked away for a single, while Giddings has a half-hearted lbw appeal against Winfield.

Meanwhile, as the 30-year-old from Guyana slings down a legside wide, the plot thickens about Giddings - rumour is, she may be an ambidextrous bowler! It's all left-arm seam so far, though.

You can see the change in the colour of the pitch. The lighter parts are drier and that's where the bowlers are getting more carry.

  20. Eng 2-0published at 1 over

Connell lets fly with a couple of early wides to get England up and running, although the right-arm seamer does manage to get one to rear up a bit at Winfield, which she evades.

It's a rather long over - extended by those wides, and a car-horn which causes Connell to pull up just before her delivery stride. No runs off the bat yet.
